John Lennon Quotes Help Us Remember a Legend

lennonJohn Lennon was murdered 30 years ago today. Anyone over 40 remembers exactly where they were when they heard the horrible news. Anyone younger has no doubt had the story recounted to them many times over.

I live but a few blocks from Central Park and often pass by the Strawberry Fields memorial, so John is in a weird way a constant presence in my life. I loved his music. I mean, who doesn't love The Beatles? And "Imagine"? "Give Peace a Chance"? What about "Beautiful Boy"?

But I also admire what he stood for. Love and peace and laughter.

John's wry sense of humor and childlike wonder of the world made him eternally quotable.

Here are some of my personal favorites:

On The Beatles:

It was like being in the eye of a hurricane. You'd wake up in a concert and think, Wow, how did I get here?

We're more popular than Jesus now; I don't know which will go first, rock 'n' roll or Christianity.

You have to be a bastard to make it, and that's a fact. And The Beatles are the biggest bastards on earth.

(Note: the tongue-in-cheek Jesus quote was not received well by older folks. Not. At. All.)

On fatherhood and Sean:
He didn't come out of my belly, but my God, I've made his bones, because I've attended to every meal, and how he sleeps, and the fact that he swims like a fish because I took him to the ocean. I'm so proud of all those things. But he is my biggest pride.

On Yoko:

As usual, there is a great woman behind every idiot.
Rituals are important. Nowadays it's hip not to be married. I'm not interested in being hip.

On music
, he opines this:
Music is everybody's possession. It's only publishers who think that people own it.

And on life?
The more I see the less I know for sure.

And, finally, my favorite:
Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.
RIP John.
