Amber Heard Comes Out, Who Is Next?

On Saturday, gorgeous actress Amber Heard came out as a lesbian by walking the red carpet at the 25th anniversary GLAAD event with her partner, Tasya van Ree.

Heard, who starred in Zombieland and Pineapple Express among other movies, spoke openly about what it meant to come out, saying that she didn't want to be "a part of the problem" by staying in the closet.

Good for Amber.

But what about all the others?

Think about poor Ricky Martin having to "hide" in the closet for years even though we all already knew and no one thought any less of him for it. We've all heard the rumors about Tom Cruise, Oprah Winfrey, John Travolta, and so many others. Why are they so afraid?

All of the people named above have had rumors floating around about them. There is no way to confirm or deny the facts that John Travolta has been photographed kissing a man and people think Oprah Winfrey is with Gayle King and only says she's "best friends" to stay in the closet.

We could go around and around over who is actually a lesbian and who isn't. There is no proof. But the truth is, in at least one of the cases, it's probably true. But so what?

First we might ask: why is it anyone's business? And why, indeed? Actresses and actors have no obligation to reveal the details of their sexuality to us. Maybe they're bisexual or asexual or trisexual (whatever that might be), and honestly, if they make movies we like, then who gives a flying tucked penis?

But, for argument's sake, let's pretend it is our business and we have the right to know. Then why not just come out? Until earlier this morning, I knew Amber Heard not by her name, but by her pretty face that I would have recognized, but not known. Coming out was good for her.

At a certain point, when the rumors hit such a fever pitch that they're considered less rumor and more fact, we have to ask ourselves: why wouldn't the person just come out?

Take Oprah for instance. She is Oprah! She is famous! She is rich! If she were a lesbian, why would she not just be a lesbian?

Good for Amber Heard for having the courage to come out of the closet. And since it's apparently the public's right to know, this will hopefully help others do the same. Because honestly, no one cares as much as you think they do.

As the old cliche goes: Those who care don't matter and those who matter don't mind. So come out, come out wherever you are gay Hollywood! We won't love you any less, and it's possible we just may love you even more.

Do you care if stars are gay?
