Do the American Music Awards Discriminate Against Old People?

Make no mistake about it: Despite a night of interesting and varied performances from unlikely groups, the 2010 American Music Awards on November 21 belonged to Justin Bieber.

The 16-year-old pop sensation took home four titles, making tweens everywhere quake with delight and their parents feel veery old, indeed.

But even if you're too old (like me) to legally have a crush on the cutie with his shaggy cut and toddler-esque face, at least we got a blast from the past, too. Both the Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block took to the stage together, causing teenage girls everywhere to simultaneously say: who are they?

It was a night full of performances from a (mostly) new generation of performers, including Bieber, Taylor Swift, and several others who made me feel over the hill and ancient. And I'm guessing most who are 30+ felt the same.

But it was Bieber, a child who is half my age, the protege and friend of R&B singer Usher (who also took home a couple awards himself, including Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist), who was the king of the musical jungle.

I am old enough to be his mom!

Despite making me feel ancient, the ceremony did have some highlights. Here are a few:

Justin Bieber: Bieber took home the following awards: Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist; Favorite Pop/Rock Album for My World 2.0; T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist of the Year; and Artist of the Year. In his speeches, he thanked everyone and said he couldn't stop smiling. He also performed earlier in the evening with a gospel choir, but it was the late King of Pop who got the most gratitude from the young singer.

And I wanna thank Michael Jackson, because without Michael Jackson none of us would be here.

Michael Buble: The favorite of adults everywhere took home Favorite Adult Contemporary Artist and also won our hearts with his thoughtful (and inclusive) acceptance speech:

I’d like to thank ... all you beautiful, beautiful fans -- young, old, gay, straight, black, white, rich, poor.

Rihanna: Favorite R&B Female Artist Rihanna asked the obvious:
Don't we all wish we could have green hair and make it look good?
Yes, always. Actually, no. Not ever. Not even once.
Some other highlights:
  • Taylor Swift: Swift won Favorite Country Female Artist over Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood.
  • Glee Volume 3: Favorite Soundtrack Album
  • Lady Antebellum: Favorite Country Band
  • Black Eyed Peas: Favorite Pop or Rock Band, Duo, or Group
  • Muse: Favorite Alternative Rock Artist
  • Shakira: It was Shakira's third time to take home Favorite Latin Music Artist.

Did you watch last night? What did you think?
