Michael Jackson 'Breaking News': Latest Release a Fake?

michael jackson new albumThe single from the forthcoming album by Michael Jackson, "Breaking News," was released early this morning. The response so far has been underwhelming -- many fans aren't convinced that it's actually him singing.

The song fades into a montage of news clips about Jackson being hounded by the media and paparazzi before shifting gears into a poppy dance beat that will have you flashing back to "Billie Jean."

The song is catchy, that's for sure. But it's the vocals that are drawing some major criticism.

Michael Cragg writing for The Guardian had this to say:

The vocal comes as a shock because it doesn't really sound like him. Deeper and somehow flatter than on his last album, 2001's Invincible, it sounds like a heavily treated guide vocal.

Other MJ fans are complaining that the vocals sound too unfinished to be Jackson and that if anything, it sounds like the famous impersonator, Jason Malachi. (I would add that there are so many background vocals, it's definitely hard to parse out which is which.)

All this together with the fact that Jackson's mother, Katherine, and his two eldest children, Prince and Paris, told TMZ they believe that some of the tracks on the new album, Michael, which is due out December 14, aren't actually his and we're all left wondering what to believe.

It could be that true fans are grumpy over the fact that this posthumous album is going to be released in the first place. In fact, Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am turned down an offer to collaborate on the project explaining:

He wouldn't have wanted it that way. Freaking parasites! ... How you gonna release Michael Jackson when Michael Jackson ain't here to bless it?

In other words, there's a reason Jackson left these songs unfinished. Who are we to "finish" them?

What do you think -- does "Breaking News" sound like the real Michael Jackson or an impersonator?
