Kanye West Album Cover: Let's Have a Toast to Wal-Mart

kanye westIt looks like Kanye West is up to his old tricks: hogging the media spotlight now that he has a new album to promote.

The rapper and the controversy over the album cover for his upcoming release, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, have been in the headlines for the last two days. West took to Twitter over the weekend, claiming the artwork -- which depicts a naked representation of himself in a compromising position with a topless, winged female monster (see image after the jump) -- had been banned in the USA.

But a little detective work determined he might be trying to distract us from the fact that he was just scared of pissing off Wal-Mart ...

Here's what West initially tweeted about the controversial artwork:

Yoooo they banned my album cover!!!!! ... They don't want me chilling on the couch with my phoenix!

This rant was followed up by some general boo-hooing about the commercialization of the music industry. But later, an anonymous source close to Island Def Jam said that, in fact, while West was urged to use alternative artwork, the label promised to stand behind him if he chose the nude monsters.

West, however, was unwilling to risk a boycott from mass-market retailers like Wal-Mart and Best Buy -- who often steer clear of controversial covers and content -- and caved to the pressure. But not before stewing publicly (on Twitter, where else?) about it a little more:

In all honesty ... I really don't be thinking about Wal-Mart when I make my music or album covers #Kanyeshrug!

I, for one, would like to take this opportunity to thank Wal-Mart for saving us from having to look at such a hideously ugly album cover.

And, West should be thanking the big box store for all the free publicity that came out of the situation. He acts like a wounded victim in this scenario, but now everyone knows that his album is dropping November 22.

Say what you will about Kanye -- but he's a whiz at working the media.

Do you think the album cover is too provocative?
