Gwyneth Paltrow Can Sing! Plus 7 Other Actors Who Surprised Us With Their Vocals

Gwyneth PaltrowI'm not a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow, with her fanatic organic website, and especially after she said that "every woman can make time to lose weight after having a baby." Really, don't get me started on that rant ...

So I had every intention of scoffing at her when I heard that she was not only playing a country girl role, but that she was actually singing in her upcoming movie Country Strong.

Being from the South, a fake Southern accent is like nails on a chalkboard to me, so I'm a pretty critical judge so it kills me to admit this but she sounds amazing. Dammit.

I have to say, I'm shocked at her voice -- to the point that I'm wondering why she didn't pack her bags and move to Nashville at a young age like her character in the movie. It's pretty impressive when you come across an actor or actress who not only acts well, but they can sing the hell out of some songs, too. Here are 7 actors that we were surprised by their singing abilities when watching them on the big screen.

Scarlett Johansson: I was told that the beauty could sing (looks, acting, and singing, ugh, I hate her), but I hadn't heard her voice until I watched the movie He's Just Not That Into You. So, I was curious and looked up some of her videos on YouTube. Wow. I love her raspy, channeling-Marilyn Monroe-voice.

Zooey Deschanel: Zooey has sung in a lot of her movies, but one of my favorites is Elf (love that movie!). She does a cute little duet with Will Ferrell, who isn't so bad himself.

Reese Witherspoon: Reese got back to her country roots when she played June Carter in Walk the Line. Obviously the role required singing, and she spent hours learning how to sing. It's hard to believe that she never had any professional training before this.

Joaquin Phoenix: The casting director really hit the nail on the head with Walk the Line. Not only was Reese amazing, but it's eerie how closely Joaquin sounded like Johnny Cash. Too bad he decided to pursue a career in hip hop (I'm still trying to figure out if that's a joke or not).

Catherine Zeta Jones: Ever since seeing her amazing performance in the movie Chicago, I've been dying to see her in her Broadway show, A Little Night Music. Renee Zellweger is also fantastic in this movie.

Brittany Murphy: Such a talent taken away too soon. We got a snippet of her singing ability in Clueless (remember the Mentos commercial scene?), but it wasn't until I watched her in Little Black Notebook that I was truly impressed.

Meryl Streep: Is there anything that Meryl can't do? Nah, didn't think so.

Who's your favorite singing actor/actress?
