Brangelina Beats Tabloid; Good for Them

Brad Pitt and Angelina JolieBrad Pitt and Angelina Jolie didn't take nicely to a news article that said their relationship was done. So they sued the publication, and won.

British tabloid News of the World published an article with headline that read, "Pitts All Over." The couple called the information in the article "false and intrusive."

They asked for a retraction, but after it wasn't granted, they sued.

"When the News of the World failed to publicly retract the allegations and apologize for them -- thereby leaving their readers in the dark as to the true position -- the couple felt they had no alternative than to sue," the couple's attorney, Keith Schilling, said in a statement. "Today's victory marks the end of the litigation brought by Brad and Angelina."

The judge ruled the paper has to publish an apology and pay the couple an undisclosed sum of money.

As someone who writes about celebrities for a living, I often think those who complain about the media need to stop whining. All the speculation and rumors are part of the fame game, and good or bad, publicity is publicity.

But in this case, I'm actually glad Brad and Angie won. It sounds like they gave the paper a chance to do the right thing and presented them with the facts. No one should knowingly publish false information, and if it happens inadvertently, then it should be remedied when discovered.

There are laws for a reason and to thumb your nose at them gives all media an even worse name.

And it's not like they're litigious leeches out to make a buck (they're donating the compensation to charity), rather they wanted the truth to be known ... and now it is.
