School Bus Crash Claims the Lives of 2 High School Students

school busTragic news today out of Houston: A school bus crash killed two high school students and seriously injured two others (and their driver) this morning when it hit and flipped over a guardrail on the freeway. There were four students on the bus at the time of the crash.

One girl was pronounced dead at the scene while a second girl died at the hospital (the remaining injured students are both boys). According to the Houston Police Department, the crash occurred when a woman driving a Buick next to the bus thought a car was driving into her lane and panicked, hitting the bus.

"The bus driver attempted to over-correct and put it over the overpass," said Houston Police Department spokesperson Victor Senties.

The woman driving the Buick was detained by police, but "no citations or charges have been filed against her." I can't imagine how absolutely horrible she must feel, even though this was, of course, an accident.

Nor can I imagine what the parents of those kids must be going through right now. My oldest child is in high school, and of all the horrible things a parent worries about happening to their teenager, getting killed in a school bus crash is pretty low on the list. Safe transportation to and from school is supposed to be a given, but then, nothing really is.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
