Family Smashes Open 'Dead' Teen's Tomb After Hearing Her Screaming From Inside

I can't even imagine the pain this family must be going through right now, after they had to bury their daughter a second time. Sixteen-year-old Neysi Perez had been laid to rest, when her family tore open her tomb after they heard her calling from the inside.

Perez was three months pregnant when she collapsed at her home in La Entrada, Honduras, and her family buried her in her wedding dress. She never regained consciousness after the incident, and was pronounced dead.

However, the Univision news show Primer Impacto is reporting that her family heard her calling from inside her tomb when they went to visit the site more than a day after they said good-bye.

Her mom, Maria Gutierrez, said, "As I put my hand on her grave, I could hear noises inside ... I heard banging, then I heard her voice. She was screaming for help."

She continued, "It had already been a day since we buried her ... I couldn't believe it. I was ecstatic, full of hope."

The family used a sledgehammer to open up the tomb, and the teen was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Witnesses say that she had bruises on her hands, and a glass window inside the tomb has been shattered. A cousin, Carolina Perez, reported that her body was still warm, and she detected a faint heartbeat.

Sadly, they were unable to revive the girl at the hospital, and announced her death for a second time.

Claudia Lopez was one of the doctors to work on Perez, and said, "Everybody was claiming she was alive, so I went through all the necessary procedures ... We evaluated and tried everything, but the girl was dead. They put her back in the coffin and took her away again, back to the cemetery."

More from The Stir: Mother Buried 15 Years Ago Found Alive in Florida

It's unclear whether or not Perez had really been alive at the time of her burial, but her mother believes that a terrible mistake took place. She said, "Even after a day in the tomb, the color of her body was normal. Her corpse didn't smell. She just looked like she was in a deep sleep ... There was no rigor mortis. Her body was still flexible. It was impossible that she had been dead for so many hours."

It's possible that the teen collapsed from a panic attack after hearing nearby gunfire, or she may have been the victim of a cataplectic episode, which would have left her conscious but without muscle control after experiencing a strong emotion like terror. If she was indeed buried alive, she may have died from oxygen deprivation.

No matter what happened, it's clear that her family has been on an emotional roller coaster. "We were all so happy," her mother said. "I thought I was going to get my daughter back."
