Stars Rally to Help Kelly Rutherford in Heartbreaking Fight to Bring Kids Home to U.S.

Child custody battles can be contentious, and there are often injustices -- it's a major issue for many parents and one that Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford is facing. Three years ago, Rutherford lost physical custody of her children -- Hermes, 8, and Helena, 5 -- after her ex husband Daniel Giersch's visa was revoked and he was ordered back Monaco. The reason the judge gave Giersch custody was because Rutherford was able to travel to visit them, while Giersch could not. But the children are U.S. citizens and this never should have happened.

More From The Stir: The Most Important Warning Signs a Custody Battle Could Turn Violent

As a divorced mother, my heart breaks for her. Thankfully, my ex and I co-parent well, and while I complain that he lives a little over an hour away, that's still close. I cannot imagine if my children lived in another state or another country. Rutherford has been fighting this battle to get her children back for over three years -- she and Giersch divorced when she was pregnant with their daughter. Rutherford's lawyer points out that it is unconstitutional for a judge to order her kids, who are both U.S. born citizens, to live in another country. It also needs to be noted that Giersch is German, though he lives in France and that's where the children were ordered to live. Giersch filed custody papers in Monaco, which subjects them to Monaco law, and he is attempting to prevent Rutherford from seeing her children by stripping her of all parental rights.

Awful.

Rutherford flies to visit them every chance she gets and that, combined with the custody battle, has reportedly cost her over $2.5 million dollars. She's a star. She makes a lot of money. But how could any parent handle the cost of oversees trips every three or four weeks for years and years? Besides, these children are U.S. citizens -- something went very wrong here. And I hope she is reunited with her kids and she and her ex can somehow come to an agreement that makes sense, and is in the best interest of the children. This case needs to be re-examined. Thankfully, there is some hope.

Rutherford started a petition to the White House in late April to get her children back. She needed 100,000 signatures to get the President's attention and she got them -- thanks to the support of her Gossip Girl co-star Ed Westwick, and many others including Kris Jenner, Kim Kardashian, Marcia Cross, Cindy Crawford, Lisa Rinna, and Selma Blair. Social media exploded with support and signatures filed in.

A good mother should never be separated from her young children like Rutherford has been. One would think that a celebrity would be able to get special treatment or her case be heard, but she has to fight for her and her children's rights with everything she has. This could happen to anyone -- it's the unthinkable for a parent, but her reality. And here is our chance to fix what's wrong with our system so other parents do not face the same injustice.

I'll be keeping a close eye on the outcome.
