Mike Huckabee Thinks You Chose to Be Gay

Mike HuckabeeRepublicans have never been the most sensitive when it comes to issues involving women or gays -- and Republican presidential aspirant Mike Huckabee is not going to break the mold. In fact, he may have just molded it into a 40-ounce bottle of malt liquor -- because Huckabee compared being homosexual to someone who drinks or swears. Erm, okay.

During Huckabee's appearance on CNN's State of the Union, he defended the choice of Christians to disapprove of gays and kept referring to sexual orientation as a "lifestyle." But he assured everyone that gay people can still be his friends. Oh joy. He told CNN's Dana Bash:

People can be my friends who have lifestyles that are not necessarily my lifestyle. I don't shut people out of my circle or out of my life because they have a different point of view.

Well, that's reassuring! Cough. But then he had to go put his foot in it, saying:

I don't drink alcohol, but gosh -- a lot of my friends, maybe most of them, do. You know, I don't use profanity, but believe me, I've got a lot of friends who do. Some people really like classical music and ballet and opera -- it's not my cup of tea.

Yikes. When are people going to get over this idea that being gay is something someone suddenly decides to do one day, like, er, having a glass of wine or going to the ballet?!

Nor do I buy that Huckabee is hunky dory with having pals who have a "lifestyle" he himself rejects. I don't agree with people belonging to gangs or doing hard drugs -- so I'm definitely not going to hang out with people who do!

Whether or not someone is actually born gay (I don't even know myself, knowing quite a few people who were straight for most of their lives and then eventually came out), but it's definitely not something that happens spur of the moment like a sudden desire for some ice cream. It's not like yelling "Shit!" when you stub your toe.

Gay people are still vilified in this country, still can't get married in most states, are still rejected by their families and friends and colleagues. They are still bullied in schools and jobs. No one becomes gay because they suddenly decide it would be the thing to do that day because, hey, why not?

By saying this kind of thing, Huckabee is saying that it's totally fine for large segments of the population to disapprove, bully, bash, or blame gay people because, jeez, man, they could stop being gay tomorrow if they just had a little willpower! (Sarcasm.)

As for Huckabee, he does have a choice -- to stop saying ridiculous nonsense like this.

Do you think being gay is like drinking or swearing?
