Baby Abandoned in Freezing Cold Rescued by Unlikely 'Hero'

hero cat saves baby from freezing to death

Whenever I see the words “hero” and “cat” in the same sentence — which should really be a rare occurrence, considering, and yet I feel as though it’s become oddly commonplace — I have to take a moment to side-eye my own useless cat, who is invariably crashed out on the couch doing her level best to avoid any and all situations which might call for heroism. I also have to snicker a little bit, because let’s be honest: cats lauded for their heroic deeds are almost always just being cats, like for instance in this recent case of a cat “saving” a baby from freezing to death in Russia.

Masha is a long-haired tabby cat who absolutely STUNNED humans last week when she climbed into a box which held an abandoned baby. The infant was left in the entranceway to an apartment block on a day when temperatures were several degrees centigrade below zero in Obninsk, Russia, and the cat — who normally lives in a cardboard box in the hallway of the apartments — curled up on him. The infant was discovered when Masha began yowling loudly, and the baby was rushed to a hospital where he made a full recovery.

According to a neighborhood resident, Masha the hero cat not only selflessly kept the baby alive, she notified people so he could be rescued.

She is very placid and friendly, so when I heard her meowing, I thought that perhaps she had injured herself. Normally she would have come and said hello to me. You can imagine my shock when I saw her lying in a box next to a baby. (...) Clearly her mothering instincts had taken over and she wanted to protect the child.

A paramedic added that Masha remained vigilant when help arrived:

She was so worried about where we were taking the baby. She ran right behind us, meowing.

All right, listen, I love cats just as much as the next sappy human who’s easily won over by anything that has soft fur and has many behaviors which can be mistaken for affection (I’m on to you, cats who rub against our legs when it’s dinnertime), but I really don’t think this cat was being a hero. I think this cat was stoked to find something warm to curl up against, and if she was kind of meowy about her discovery, it’s probably because she was pissed that he was hogging the box.

But sure: HERO CAT SAVES BABY. Fine. Just like that one cat who bravely kept a boy from harm out of the kindness of her heart rather than out of the instinct to defend her territory. SURE. WHATEVER. GIVE THIS CAT THE KEYS TO MOSCOW. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the TRUE nature of cats, people.
