12-Year-Old Boy Killed While Riding a Motorized Scooter He Got for Christmas

No family should ever have to mourn the loss of their young child in an avoidable accident -- the details of this story and how it took place just one day after Christmas make it even more heartbreaking. A 12-year-old boy from California was reportedly struck and killed by a vehicle right in front of his house as he was riding a motorized scooter he received as a Christmas gift.

Roman Martinez was doing what any child would after he received an exciting Christmas gift -- he was eagerly riding his new electric Razor scooter in his front yard. He reportedly left his driveway and rode the scooter into the street at one point, which was when a 30-year-old female driver in a Honda struck him.

Witnesses say they heard the screeching of tires from hitting the brakes and that the driver was hysterical when she learned she hit the boy. She remained at the scene and police say they don't think alcohol is a factor here.

Roman, who was wearing a helmet, was transported via helicopter to Loma Linda Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Roman's father told reporters he thinking "the speeding" on his street, where the limit is 35mph, is a factor, but there is no proof yet that the driver was going too fast.

According to the California Highway Patrol's statement, "The juvenile rode out of the driveway directly into the path of the oncoming Honda." The statement reportedly goes on to say that the driver "applied her brakes but was unable to stop prior to colliding with the juvenile."

The driver has not been arrested.

Our hearts go out to both the family of this little boy and the driver, who now has to live the rest of her life with a heavy heart.
