A group of middle schoolers from Columbus, Ohio, are facing serious consequences for causing their art teacher to have a potentially deadly allergic reaction. The three seventh-graders purposely smeared banana on the doorknob of their teacher's classroom and pelted her with bananas despite knowing this could kill her. Her classroom even has numerous written warnings across the room reminding everyone that she has a severe and fatal allergy to the fruit. Within minutes of touching the door, the art teacher went into anaphylactic shock and had to be rushed to the hospital.

The stunt was pulled off by a group of three seventh grade students in November.

The Daily Mail reported that a 13-year-old girl and two 12-year-old boys committed the attack at the Starling K-8 school in November 2019. The kids smeared banana on the doorknob of their art teacher's classroom and threw bananas at her during their lunch period even though she had a known severe allergy.

"They're sitting out here and they're all eating their lunch," a staff member said. "So one of them takes a banana and sits it on the door."

The teacher, only identified as Mrs. Woods, had several signs posted around her classroom that warned students that bringing bananas into the room was forbidden and that that they needed to wash their hands if they had recently eaten one.

"All of the kids know she is deathly allergic to bananas," a security guard can be heard telling police in a body camera video, reported ABC 6.  "If it touches her she will go into anaphylactic shock."

That is what happened. Within 15 minutes Woods went into anaphylactic shock, and she didn't respond to two EpiPen shots.

"She starts to change colors,"  the security guard continued. "They gave her one EpiPen. It wasn't working. They gave her another EpiPen. Her throat was starting to close up."

Another staff member called 911, and Woods was rushed to the hospital where she thankfully did recover.

Police who later arrived on the scene reported that they found a banana lying on the ground, where it had fallen after the students had thrown it at Woods and it bounced off her arm and leg, reported the Daily Mail.

"They're definitely going down for expulsion," the security guard told ABC 6. "That could be attempted murder," he said.

That is why police treated the prank as more than a practical joke.

The three students were sentenced to probation by a juvenile court, although it is unclear what charges the middle schoolers faced.

The case only came to light after ABC 6 investigated the working conditions of Columbus City School teachers and found the incident disturbing. They also discovered that overall felony assaults in schools have risen since January; 30 cases have occurred so far in 2019, and there were 65 cases in 2017.
