In a shocking case that is rocking the city of Chester in Cheshire, England, a nurse has been rearrested in connection with the deaths of several babies at a hospital where she had worked for seven years.

Lucy Letby was suspected of the murder of eight babies and the attempted murder of another six at the Countess of Chester Hospital's neonatal unit and was initially arrested in July 2018. She had been out on bail since then.

Police revealed that the 29-year-old was rearrested on Monday for the attempted murder of three additional babies.

Letby had been suspended a year before her arrest last July, and before that she had been removed from clinical duties and moved to an administrative position, according to The Guardian.

Cheshire Police said they are investigating the deaths of a total of 17 infants at the hospital between 2015 and 2016.-placeholder

Cheshire Police said they are investigating the deaths of a total of 17 infants at the hospital between 2015 and 2016.

After her latest arrest, a forensic tent was seen in front of Letby’s property as police conducted searches of her home looking for evidence tied to the deaths of the infants.

In a statement, the hospital said it is “cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.”-placeholder

In a statement, the hospital said it is “cooperating fully with the ongoing police investigation.”

The probe began two years ago, and authorities are also looking in to 16 non-fatal collapses at the same neonatal unit that also occurred from March 2015 to July 2016.

According to SWNS, Detective Inspector Paul Hughes said in statement, “The investigation into the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital is continuing.”

“This is a highly complex and very sensitive investigation and, as you can appreciate, we need to ensure we do everything we possibly can to try to establish in detail what has led to these baby deaths and collapses,” added Hughes, who is in charge of the case.

While Hughes acknowledged that he and other authorities “are unable to go into any further details about the investigation,” he did reveal the large scope of their investigation. “Due to the nature of the case and, as part of our ongoing enquiries, we have consulted with a number of medical specialists to ensure that we carry out as thorough an investigation as possible,” he said.

“We have also spoken to a large number of people to gather as much information as we can.”

In his statement, Hughes emphasized that the focus should be on justice for the victims and their families.

“This is an extremely difficult time for all the families and it is important to remember that, at the heart of this, there are a number of bereaved families seeking answers as to what happened to their children,” he said.
