Loving Mom Sacrifices Her Life for Her Unborn Baby (VIDEO)

mother dies to save baby's life

Would you give your own life to save the life of your child? I think most mothers would say yes to that hard question without a moment’s hesitation, but it seems like a particularly devastating choice when your baby hasn’t even been born yet. On November 3, 34-year-old Karisa Bugal was going into labor at the Medical Center of Aurora, Colorado, when doctors discovered she had a rare and terrifying condition that put both her and her unborn child at risk. Faced with a heartbreaking decision, Bugal sacrificed herself for her baby boy.

During labor, doctors discovered Bugal was suffering from a condition called amniotic fluid embolism. Here’s how her doctor described it:

The amniotic fluids surrounding the baby or part of the baby's skin or hair gets into the mother's bloodstream and that causes catastrophic shutdown of all the organs. We don't know how to prevent it. We don't know how to keep it from happening at all.

Only 1 to 12 mothers in every 100,000 deliveries have amniotic fluid embolism. The condition is so rare it hasn’t been studied in depth, and most mothers who develop the condition do not survive.

When her child's heart rate began to dip, Bugal was given two unspeakable options: have an immediate cesarean with anesthesia to save the baby’s life, or delay in order to try and save her own.

Her other option would have been to stay awake for her surgery, but by the time we would have put in a spinal tap or something, it's possible Declan would not have made it.

Bugal chose the surgery. At around 7:30 a.m. on November 4, Declan Jay Bugal, a healthy baby boy, was born. Bugal was able to ask about her miracle baby after her surgery and was told how much he weighed: 7 pounds, 4 ounces.

She passed away shortly thereafter, when she was in the ICU.

Here’s a news clip on this heartbreaking story:

Wes Bugal, Karisa's husband, is now faced with the struggle of moving forward on his own with a toddler and a newborn. He says he doesn’t know what to say to his son in the years to come:

How do I explain to him that his mom is gone giving birth to him? I think about that all the time. How do I explain when he asks where's mommy?

I am so terribly sorry for this family’s loss ... but I think the words will eventually come to this grieving man. He will be able to tell Declan that his mommy did everything she could do to keep him safe and she was so sorry to say goodbye, but she had to go. He was brought into this world sheltered by the fierce, protective love of his mother, and she will be in his heart forever.

A GoFundMe account has been set up in Karisa Bugal’s name. To date, over $45,000 has been raised for her family.

Do you think you would have made this same choice?
