Students Armed With Nacho Cheese Arrested After Massive Food Fight

Righetti High SchoolWhat started as a minor fight between two sophomore students at Righetti High School in Santa Maria, California, ended as a major food fight with law enforcement officers. Six people ended up arrested for attacking the cops, who were trying to break up the brawl. Things got so violent that one policeman allegedly hit a female student, although so far, the department is backing his actions.

In this six-second clip, a deputy's sheriff can be seen striking the girl. The campus brawl brought in police, firefighters, and state highway patrol officers and caused a 90-minute lockdown at the school before an early dismissal.

Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department Spokeswoman Kelly Hoover said that the "deputy's actions were justified," and I can't say I blame her. Witnesses say that students resisted attempts by law enforcement to break up a series of escalating fights and began attacking the cops by pelting them with food and bottles.

This image of a cop covered in nacho cheese sauce was captured by one Twitter user at the scene:

Hoover said, "It was definitely a dangerous situation for our deputies. One of the deputies was punched in the chest," but 17-year-old Chloe Williamson thinks they overreacted.

"The cops made it a lot more than it had to be, pretty much," she said. "[She] was resisting, but he did not have to go punch her in the face. They could have tried other things before."

Could they have though? With so many incidents of school shootings and other violence, how could officers know in the heat of the moment which kids are just being dumb and which may be planning to attack? You do what you have to do to stop an attack.

No one was injured, thankfully, but two female and four male students were charged with a variety of offenses, including resisting arrest, assaulting a law enforcement officer, possession of marijuana, assaulting a school employee, and obstructing officers in the performance of their duties.

A word to the wise, kids ... when the cops show up to break up a fight, let them. If you pelt them with nacho sauce, you just might find yourself arrested.

Do you think the cops overreacted or do you think their actions were justified?
