Girl Tragically Killed While Sunbathing in Her Driveway

towel and sunglassesA Utah teenager was killed over the weekend in a tragic sunbathing accident. On Friday, 15-year-old Marli Hamblin decided to catch some rays, so she spread a blanket out on the driveway, popped in some earbuds, and soaked up the sun.

Within minutes, her 18-year-old sister backed a truck up out of the garage and accidentally ran her over. Marli suffered massive head injuries, and died in the hospital on Sunday. The community has rallied around the family, and especially around Marli's big sister, who is understandably "beating herself up" over the fatal mistake.

"Everyone was in shock and in panic," Takenna Hamblin, a cousin, said. "It’s been tough, we’re really close and it’s hard to see a loved one like this."

Another relative was next door at the time of the accident, and says he spoke to Marli and just moments before she was struck, and heard about her plans for an upcoming date. "She was going to go fishing," Tyler Hamblin said. He also said this is a a "trying time" for the family, and they're all "coming to grips with it."

"It was difficult to see," Tyler continued. "This is life-changing for our family. We're keeping her (older) sister real close."

The 18-year-old is not being charged for her sister's death. Officer Erin Behm of the Syracuse Police Department said, "The driver wasn't paying attention, obviously didn't think there would be anyone in the driveway, and just backed out of the driveway ... no foul play, it was just a tragic accident."

I can't even imagine the pain this family is feeling right now as they come to terms with their loss. Losing a child is probably one of the worst things anyone can ever go through, and to lose one in such a horrific accident is just unfathomable.

Do you always 100 percent check behind your car when you back up?
