maria von trappInterest in The Sound of Music was renewed when NBC opted to make over the musical on a television version starring Carrie Underwood. Even though reviews on the show were split, there's no doubt that the original movie catapulted the Von Trapps to become household names. Sadly, Maria von Trapp, the last of the singing children who were immortalized The Sound of Music, died in Vermont of natural causes, according to her half-brother.

Maria von Trapp was actually the third-oldest child of Agathe Whitehead and Captain Georg von Trapp. Her other siblings included Rupert, Agathe, Werner, Hedwig, Johanna, and Martina.

When Georg married his second wife, Maria Kutschera von Trapp, she wrote a book titled The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, which inspired the famous play and Julie Andrews movie musical.

No doubt Maria will be well missed by her fans and loved ones the world over.

Georg and Maria would go on to have three more children: Rosemarie, Eleonore, and Johannes, after the family fled Austria when it was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. After they arrived in New York, the family performed and became well known among concert audiences. Eventually, they opened up a ski lodge in Stowe, Vermont.

In case you were wondering, Maria was portrayed as Louisa in the musical.

"Thank you for your thoughts. Maria had a wonderful life and while we will miss her, the memories of her will live on," Johannes, the youngest brother, wrote in a statement.

He also said, "She was a lovely woman who was one of the few truly good people. There wasn't a mean or miserable bone in her body. I think everyone who knew her would agree with that."

Such an iconic group and beloved family that inspired so many people. Needless to say, their legacy will live on every time someone watches or hears the songs from The Sound of Music.
