George Zimmerman's Wife Files for Divorce -- Who Can Blame Her?

Shellie ZimmermanIt was less than two months ago that George Zimmerman was acquitted for the murder of Trayvon Martin. The decision drew outrage across the country, and instead of him being exonerated in the public eye, he only became more of a villain to many. Through it all we watched his wife, Shellie Zimmerman, stand by her man (even committing perjury along the way). She's done standing there now, though, and today she filed for a divorce.

According to Reuters, Shellie filed this afternoon in Seminole County. She's asking for custody of their dogs and "equitable distribution" of their assets and debts. A specific reason wasn't given for the divorce, but her attorney, Kelly Sims, said, "There comes a time when you know you just can't continue living with someone. That time is now for Shellie."

I'm honestly a little shocked it took this long to happen. Between the stress of the trial and the public scorn for her husband, it couldn't have been an easy time. And you have to wonder how much she judged him as the rest of the world did.

Just last week, she told Good Morning America that she had to "think about" whether she would stay married to him. She also revealed that they had problems before the shooting, and that she wasn't home the night it occurred because they had gotten into an argument the night before and she had been staying at her father's house.

Since the shooting, she said life has been tough.

We have pretty much lived like gypsies for the past year and a half. We've lived in a 20-foot trailer in the woods, scared every night that someone would go and find us and that it would be horrific.

So putting an already troubled marriage through everything that happened after the shooting -- it seems that divorce was almost inevitable for the couple. Sure marriage vows say it's "for better or worse," but sometimes the worst is just so bad it wins.

Are you surprised to learn the Zimmermans are getting divorced?
