Pregnant Woman & Her Friend Drown Just Hours After Being Rescued From a Bad Hike

pregnant woman drownsA pregnant woman and her friend have both drowned after one of the women accidentally drove their car off a boat dock and into the ocean in Maine. It happened during a very foggy night, just hours after the two women had to be rescued from a hike by an off-duty firefighter who found them and gave them a ride back to their car in the heavy downpour.

Amy Stiner, 37, and Melissa Moyer, 38, called 911 in a panic as their car filled up with water, but it was apparently too late. The phone went dead. Authorities found the car submerged an hour later. Both women were dead, presumably drowned. It's made all the more tragic by the fact that Stiner was five months pregnant.

How did this happen? Apparently they got lost in the fog and turned right instead of left. Left would have led them back to town. Right went into the ocean.

I can only imagine how these women felt. They were probably cold and wet and exhausted from getting lost. They probably thought they were safe. It's just an insane tragedy.

Moyer was the mother of one 12-year-old son who now has no mother. If you have never been to Maine, it might be hard to imagine how this could happen, but as someone who has lived a good portion of my life in the state, let me assure you, it's easy to imagine.

The fog is dense and can make it very hard to see. It's disorienting. Perhaps the saddest part of the story is that Stiner had gone to Maine to become an organic farmer and to raise a family with her husband. It was a new spot for her and she was happy and outdoorsy and surely would have raised a healthy, happy child.

Now she never will. As a pregnant mom myself, this story haunts me. We do all we can to protect our unborn babies. We eat right, we exercise, we avoid activities that would possibly cause injury. But one wrong turn can change everything. I can only imagine the fear and panic they must have experienced.

My heart goes out to both of the families of these women. It's just so senseless.

Can you imagine what you might have done in this situation?
