Faith-Healing Parents Pick Prayer Over Medicine & Lose Another Child

catherine and herbert schaibleI'm not one to knock somebody else's religion or belief system or whatever, but Catherine and Herbert Schaible sure do make it tempting. The couple, who believes in faith-healing, is already serving 10 years probation for the 2009 death of their 2-year-old son, Kent, who died from pneumonia when they refused medical care. Now another Schaible child, an 8-month-old boy, has succumbed to the same fate: The baby died last week after suffering for days from "diarrhea and breathing problems" without medical attention.

As a mom, I cringe to think of what that poor helpless baby must have gone through in his final moments. How could any parent stand by and watch their child die a preventable death? For any reason?

No criminal charges against the Schaibles have been filed yet, but that could change depending on autopsy results. As of now, the couple is -- get this! -- being charged with violating their probation, the terms of which specified "seeking medical care for their remaining children." (The Schaibles pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter for Kent's death.)

Maybe there's some legal loophole I don't know about, but I'm having a hard time understanding how the Schaibles managed to retain custody of their "remaining children." We've all heard our share of stories about parents whose kids get taken away over offenses that aren't half as serious as involuntary manslaughter. Come on, Britney Spears temporarily lost custody of her kids over her "drug- and alcohol-fueled lifestyle." I just don't get it. The Schaibles kept their kids, and now another one is dead. This should never have happened.

Are you shocked to hear this faith-healing couple let a second child die without medical attention?
