CIA Director David Petraeus Resigns After Admitting to Having an Affair

general petraeusPolitical news junkies who love a good scandal and thought the fun was over after the election was called, hold on to your hats! Things have just gotten real up in D.C. now that CIA Director David Petraeus has resigned, citing an extramarital affair.

In a letter released to the CIA work force this afternoon, Petraeus revealed the affair, writing, "After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours." He went on to note that President Obama "graciously accepted my resignation."

Whoa. Well, it's not like Washington wasn't already home to various folks in high-power positions having extramarital affairs, huh?

Not that I'm excusing what he did by any means, and it does seem like he made the right decision to resign, as he didn't want his inappropriate behavior to reflect poorly on the CIA or the U.S. government as a whole. But I'm still not sure it adds up that an affair is grounds for stepping down? As Gawker noted, "Why an extramarital affair disqualifies you from overseeing the killing civilians at the CIA isn't clear, unless there are extenuating circumstances."

So, perhaps, the "extenuating circumstances" are the kicker here? Nothing about the woman with whom he cheated is known (yet), but there's a source who knows Petraeus speculated that the woman he cheated with "was either a foreign national or a reporter. He loves reporters." Oh boy ... There's also the possibility that it was a woman he worked with, which of course put Petraeus in a more compromising situation by trying to hold on to his gig. The bottom-line is that it seems like the details of the affair must have been such that he felt like he really screwed up. And he must have felt he had to quit as a result and/or lest the situation got even more out of control ...

Only time will tell what the truth is. Or perhaps we'll never get the full scoop. Then again, now that the media has had a taste of what might be a headline-grabbing scandal, I'm guessing they won't stop 'til they've got all the dirty details.
