Schools Reopen in Haiti For First Time Since Quake

After nearly three months since a devastating earthquake killed an estimated 230,000 people, schools have resumed in Haiti. Only a few hundred of four-thousand Haitian schools have reopened its doors, but according to the Associated Press (AP), educators in Haiti say the regular curriculum will wait while they address the trauma do the earthquakes. UNICEF says it hopes to have 700,000 children back in school by the middle of May.

Conjoined Twin Surgeries Still Give Hope

Last week surgeons in London successfully separated four-month-old conjoined twins after a 14-hour operation at the Great Ormond Street Hospital.

The two boys, Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf, were born in December joined at the chest, but reportedly shared no major organs.

"Celebrating" Confederate History Month in Schools

Recently, Bob McDonnell, the governor of Virginia issued a proclamation marking April as Confederate History Month. That decision sparked a flurry of media coverage and outrage and it was viewed as disrespectful to African Americans.

I'm all about celebrating history. And can even stomach the parts that I don't like. But it always surprises and disheartens me to see people make light of nearly 400 years of systemic oppression.  

Even worse, a few years ago, I found myself in the middle of my own Confederate brouhaha over a field day event at my daughter's school, of all places.

Lately, I've been feeling like some sort of fertility fossil. A few weeks ago, I was thumbing through a magazine while waiting in the doctor's office, and I came across an ad looking for women to sell their eggs.

Hey, we're in a recession and almost all money making ideas are up for consideration. I have no plans on using any more of my eggs, but before I could even snap myself back to reality, there it was it large bold print: Only women under age 35. What? My eggs were no good? I couldn't believe it.

What's In a Name? Redefining Labor

Recently, one of my first-time preggers friends asked me, "Why do they call it labor?" 

"Ummm, because it's hard work," I replied.

But then I thought about it. Yes, for many women, labor will be some of the hardest work you will ever do. But why do we call it labor? Nobody likes labor.  There's a national holiday to avoid labor.  And let's face it, nobody gets excited about hard work.  Which made me wonder, could we change the language of labor to make it more positive?
