My life's goal was to be a mom. So, I became a registered nurse in order to be able to provide for my future kids. Boy, oh, boy, and lots of girls -- were my prayers ever answered! By the age of 29, I was a mom to eight (count them!) healthy beautiful kids.

Since then life has gone in all sorts of crazy directions, including a hit reality show on TLC that ran for six seasons, three New York Times best-selling books, and single mom-hood!

Since having kids, my goal in life is to be the best mom I can possibly be ... and to simply and successfully survive each day!

Recently, a very close family friend turned 18. It was a long awaited day and a big milestone for her. I've known her parents since I was 18, so she and her family are practically an extended part of our family. She looks up to me like a big sister and is very wise beyond her young years. We often have deep adult discussions. She's such a joy to have around.

I made a new -- and very unlikely -- friend recently.

Her name is Kisa (often called Kisa Lu) and she's grey and speckly spotted and has floppy ears. She's taller than I am when she stands on her back legs (which she doesn't often do) because she is a Great Dane.

She belongs to a good friend of mine who was very worried about how she and I would get along when I visited recently.

This is me in March 2004 at just 20 weeks pregnant with sextuplets! If you are a mom, I'm betting you “live tired.” The way I see it, it's as if pregnancy is nature’s way of preparing us for our new way of living a “tired life” -- which quickly becomes our new normal -- for the next 18 years or so. I can only speak for myself and what I know about being pregnant twice ... and having given birth to eight kids. (I still smile when I say -- or write -- that by the way. It still seems to defy logic, but it's my reality and I love it.)

I chalked one up for my mom memory books the other day. But it's one I kinda wish I didn't have to record. Since “all's well that ends well,” as the adage goes, I am sure I will go on unscarred, because it did end well. Still, I'm sure I'll be the laughing stock of my girls and their friends for the immediate future, at the very least.

  • Summer Countdown Is Here! (PHOTO)

As the school year winds down, I am finding that it's not just the kids who are insanely excited for the final day of school -- and for the many long hot days of summer that will soon follow. But the kids do take year-end very seriously. It seems like all kids keep a countdown, and in our house, my kids not only keep a verbal countdown that is discussed every hour on the hour, at the table during every meal, on the way TO and FROM the bus stop each day, but they also keep a written version of the countdown on a paper calendar. I can only assume that is meant as a “double check” to break up any sort of sibling end-of-school-year-countdown discrepancies. Oh, and they also mention it as their final thought each night as I tuck them into bed -- because I may have forgotten how few days of school are now left, don't you know.
