"When I was in college my roommate Charlotte and I lived in an old house where our apartment was the second and third floor. One night my boyfriend John was staying over with me, and Charlotte's boyfriend Chad was staying with her. No one had been drinking or anything. It was just a regular night and we were all asleep.

"In the middle of the night, John and I are woken up by this loud ruckus of Charlotte and Chad running down the stairs and freaking out. They explained that they were woken up by someone trying to get in their room. Charlotte's bedroom door never closed properly so she would keep this heavy box in front of the door to keep it closed. They heard the box sliding across the floor like someone was pushing the door open.

"They woke up and Chad yelled, 'Who's there?' The noise stopped and they heard footsteps going down the hallway but not down the stairs. There was another bedroom on the third floor, but it was empty. They totally believed that someone was in the house and would have to be in the empty bedroom.

"They decided to get up and run past the bedroom and down the stairs together because they were terrified. We called the police and they came and looked around. There was no forced entry anywhere. Doors, windows, all closed and locked. It was winter and there was snow on the ground so you could see there hadn't been anyone around outside. None of us believed in ghosts and truly had thought the whole time it had been a break-in, but there was just no way to explain what happened." -- Emily L., Brooklyn, New York
