A Spelling Mistake Almost Kept This Couple Apart 31 Years After Meeting

Talk about true love prevailing! In 1982, a 17-year-old British girl named Mandy Ashforth met a boy while on a girls’ weekend. She and Barrie Moat only spent one day together, but they shared an intense connection, and agreed to meet again at a bus stop in her town a week later.

Ashforth showed up, but Moat didn’t. She waited two hours for him, but went home “brokenhearted.” Over the course of the next 30 years, she never got over their romantic encounter. She said, “Even though we spent less than 24 hours together and he stood me up on our next date, I never stopped thinking about Barrie … I always thought of him as my first real love and despite the number of years that passed, I always dreamt that one day I would see him again.”

It took three decades, but they finally found each other again. And it almost didn’t happen! In the past few years, Ashforth had made occasional attempts to find her long lost love over the Internet, but nothing ever turned up. But after she separated from her husband this year, she tried again on Facebook.

It turns out that she had been looking for “Barry” Moat, when she should have been looking for Barrie Moat!

“I’d always spelt his name ‘Barry’,” she said, “But for some reason I tried spelling it ‘Barrie’ this time. I couldn’t believe it when his profile popped up.

“I recognized his smile immediately and knew it was him. All of a sudden, I felt like I had all those years ago.”

She sent a friend request, he accepted, and the two reconnected immediately. He said, “…when her message popped up asking if I went to Bridlington in 1982 and met a girl, I was stunned. I couldn’t believe Mandy had tracked me down after 31 years. Instantly memories of that romantic weekend came flooding back.”

They exchanged phone numbers, and thousands of texts a week (!!) until meeting a month later. The same chemistry was still there, and five months later he proposed.

They’re currently planning their wedding for July 2014, and Barrie has no plans to disappear at this rendezvous. He said, “I believe things happen for a reason and it just shows that it’s never too late to find love. One thing’s for sure, I won’t be letting Mandy go ever again.”

Everybody say, “Awwww!”
