Man Behind Manti Te'o Fake Girlfriend Hoax Says He Was in Love With Manti (VIDEO)

Ah, it's that old story of a boy who loved a girl. And a girl who loved a boy. But then she died. And then she came back to life. And then the boy lied about it. And then everyone discovered the girl was really a boy. And the boy loved the boy. Sniff.

Ronaiah Tuiasosopo, the boy behind the Manti Te'o fake girlfriend hoax, has confessed what might have seemed the obvious awhile ago -- he was actually in love with Manti. So he, um, pretended to be a girl. Because that makes sense, right?

Ronaiah, who spent years constructing an elaborate hoax wherein he convinced Notre Dame football player Manti Te'o that he was actually a pretty girl named Lennay Kekua, told Dr. Phil in an interview that will air tomorrow that he fell "deeply, romantically in love" with Manti. This is sounding like a Tennessee Williams play.

He said he would pretend to be Lennay every night on the phone -- and that his theater background helped him fake a high-pitched girly voice. Says Dr. Phil:

Here we have a young man that felt deeply, romantically in love (with Te’o). I asked him straight up, was this a romantic relationship with you and he says yes. Are you then therefore gay? He says, when you put it that way, yes. Then he caught himself and said: 'I am confused.'

He's confused?! How about Manti? Sheesh. Hey, at least Ronaiah didn't go out and marry some unsuspecting woman like so many "confused" gay men do -- but was this really any better? Being confused about your sexuality is no excuse for lying and manipulating.

When this story first broke, the first thing I thought was that perhaps the guy behind it was secretly in love with Manti. It was either that, or he despised him. But I figured that the first scenario, if true, would never come to light. Because a guy who would go to all of that trouble to pretend to be a girl was burying his sexuality -- lying about it to himself. And he certainly wasn't going to come clean.

But apparently he did to Dr. Phil. So for that I applaud him. Now I hope he's able to put this behind him, and get a real boyfriend. And I hope Manti, who says he is not gay, can put this behind him and get a real girlfriend. As for myself, I'm hoping the final twist on this bizarre love triangle is that Diane O'Meara, the "real" Lennay, ends up with Manti.

Did you see this one coming?
