The Embarrassing Facebook Photos You Deleted Might Still Be There

For those of us who thought we were smart to delete any and all incriminating, embarrassing photos from our Facebook page, the news today is our biggest nightmare come true: Those deleted photos could STILL be lurking out there on the Internet.

That's right, Facebook has confirmed that many "deleted" photos have not disappeared completely and remain on the social network's servers. That means that despite your best efforts, the whole world may see that photo of you passed out on the floor with "Loser" in black marker on your forehead, or the one where you unwisely wore a bikini after too many burritos, or the one in which you thought it'd be fun to dress like your dog.

So, how do you know if they are still up there?

New Mom Worry: Someone Could Be Trying to Steal Your Baby's Identity

Posted by Mary Fischer
on Feb 6, 2012 at 7:32 PM

If you're anything like most new moms, you're probably concerned about things like whether or not you're messing up your baby's teeth by using a pacifier, the color, shape, and consistency of his poop, and whether or not you're ever going to get back into your skinny jeans again. Sound about right?

Now you can add one more worry to your list: Your baby may be a target for identity theft.. Yes, I'm serious. Some weirdo out there likely wants to pretend to be your 10-pound bundle of joy.

Creating a Gmail Account for Your Baby Means You're Smart -- Not a Geek

We're expecting baby number three shortly, and as someone who is online all day long, I put a lot of thought into the future of digital media and kids. I've been trying to figure out the right mix of digital content, gaming, and gadgets for my two wee ones and now I'm thinking long and hard about whether these kids need to grab their Facebook, Twitter, and domains even before they're old enough to type.

Digital content is evanescent. Today's Tweet is tomorrow's fish wrapper, and the services popular today probably won't be popular 10 years from now. So what is a parent to do to safeguard your child's digital identity?

Google's New Search Results Should Creep You Out

search plus your world screenshot from googleEven though Facebook underwent a major overhaul and inundated us with changes months ago, people are still complaining all the time that they can't get their News Feed to stay put on "Recent Stories" over "Highlighted" ones. It seems try as we might, Facebook still wants to default to Highlighted and assume it knows what we want to read. So so annoying. Now, if that wasn't bad enough, we're going to have to deal with the same BS via Google.

Yup, starting yesterday, the search engine we all use as our default has begun implementing something they call Search Plus Your World, which is a snazzy way to say they're adulterating your Google searches with your own personal content. But for as "personalized" as it's supposed to be, it's kind of ironic that they're not even giving us a choice in the matter. I'm totally weirded out by how my searches have already been co-opted.

3 Inexpensive Camera Systems for Watching Your House During Travel

Posted by John Biggs
on Dec 28, 2011 at 1:21 PM

Now is the season for travel and if you're leaving a house behind (or leaving older relatives after the festivities) you may be thinking a bit about keeping the house safe and sound while you're gone. In-home camera systems have always been prohibitively expensive but newer wireless technologies and low-power camera systems now allow you to keep an eye on the hearth and home using a few simple cameras and a wireless network.

Here are some of my favorite choices for keeping an eye on things while you're away.

Moms Matter 2012

sarah palin familyAs the election season heats up we'll be seeing more and more candidates out there stumping for your vote. When candidates are out and about it gives us a chance to see them as "regular" people. At least that's the image they hope to portray. This is where we see the cliche baby smooches and grandma pecks on the cheek as the candidates establish their own brands. We'll see candidates at various local diners and fire houses high-fiving all the townspeople and wiggidy wacks. Soon the candidates will step out from the shield of a podium and show their true selves (or as much of their true selves as their handlers want us to see). This is where it starts to get good. It's at this point of the circus campaign we see the candidates' families come out to play.

You Really Shouldn't Worry If Your Child Draws Pictures of Naked People

statue of DavidI've always been modest with my body. However, I've always been very open about bodies in general -- I use anatomically accurate words for my kids' body parts and rolled my eyes at my peers who laughed at the word "penis" in health class. My mom was a nurse, so it helps that things like that were everyday conversation for her. You pee from a penis; breast milk comes from breasts.

Not everyone sees things that way. Many of us struggle with seeing something as simple as women breastfeeding their babies, despite the fact that there is art of Mary breastfeeding Jesus much more openly than modern women do. We even have folks who think showering with a toddler of the opposite sex is somehow abuse. So, it's no surprise that when children draw pictures of nudity and people freak out. Even teachers.

New Facebook ‘Timeline’ Is Big, Splashy Fun

Posted by Adriana Velez
on Dec 15, 2011 at 2:58 PM

facebook timelineHave you heard? Facebook is making major changes -- AGAIN. I know, I know, we love to hate the Facebook changes. Ugh, can't Facebook stay the same for longer than three days?

Not to worry! The change is optional (for now), it's just on your profile page, and it's even kind of cool. Now, instead of a lot of text, it's a large photo that dominates the page. It looks a little more like a blog. And there's this nifty little timeline to the right of that photo. So what else do you need to know now that Facebook is finally making the Timeline mandatory? Keep reading to find out!

Not Being on Facebook Is Nothing to Brag About

mark zuckerberg talking about facebook"The Protester" may be Time's Person of the Year, but there's also something to be said for the Facebook resister. We all know at least one of 'em. They're that guy who was on the site for a few months, maybe even a year or so, and then quit cold turkey, citing a slew of popular reasons -- either that they felt the site made them "more alienated" from their REAL friends or that they think the site impinges on their privacy.

Sure, there are resisters who are quiet about it, who don't make a big to-do out of the fact that they're not one of the roughly 200 million users in the U.S. (or two-thirds of the population). But more often than not, they're the most vocal, gripey, holier-than-thou types who can't shut UP about Facebook and all of the "eeevil" it represents. (It's like, if you hate Facebook so much, why are you so obsessed with it?!)

‘America’s Next Top Model’ Star Lost Over a Facebook Mistake We’re All Guilty Of

Posted by Adriana Velez
on Dec 8, 2011 at 5:47 PM

facebookWas anyone surprised last night when America's Next Top Model crowned Lisa D'Amato and Angelea Preston was disqualified -- for mysterious reasons? It looked like Angelea was going to win, but CW issued a statement saying that after production wrapped, they "learned information that made Angelea ineligible" and disqualified her!

There's a theory out there about what exactly disqualified Angelea: she may have bragged on Facebook about winning -- and before the finale aired, too. Oh Angelea, I cringe for you. The Facebook boast is unconfirmed. But if true, it's an obvious spoiler rule-breaker. Not only that -- Facebook bragging is just kind of gross.
