When you think about it, moms like us all have similar cozy little routines. So much of it revolves around our kids, because we adore them, and we love spending time together as a family. But sometimes what we need most (and don't even know it!) is a date night.

In this episode of Mya and Her Moms, Mya's moms are celebrating their 12th anniversary. They go out to dinner and then to a party at a friend's house. And if you have any lingering belief that gay couples are weird or different from straight couples, this ought to dispel that misconception right away. Because the conversation between them sounds exactly like what it is in my (straight) household...namely, "WHEE!!!! A night with no kids!!"

How many times have you looked at the Mom or Dad of an only child and told them, "Oh, she must be lonely"? Come on, admit it. I'm one and done over here, and I know I've heard it enough times!

But as I watched the latest episode of Mya and Her Moms this week, I wanted to stand up and start punching my fist in the air. Only child Mya was having a playdate with a little girl who has three siblings. One of the things the girls have in common? They're both a little lonely.

Got that y'all? Loneliness is not an only child problem!

I've always looked at children's birthday parties with one thought in mind: let's get this thing over with. That's meant "the more, the merrier" type affairs, when the number of small children running underfoot is almost topped by the number of adult friends and family gabbing away in lawn chairs. It's insanity.

But I think I have finally found an out. I've spent all these years afraid that if I leave anyone out of the kid's birthday party, I'll be mopping up tears and tamping down hurt feelings down the line. But the latest episode of Mya and Her Moms makes the case for kicking the grandparents out of the kid's birthday party.

    Hear that? Buh bye grandparents!

How often do you hear this: "Oh, he/she can't be gay! He/she is married!"

Not true. Gay people can and do marry members of the opposite sex. And most of the time, it's not a deliberate deception. They really believe they're straight. They aren't hiding anything or lying to themselves.

That was true of Lisa, one of the two moms in Mya and Her Moms. In this episode, she was married for about five years in the past, and had relationships with men since high school. She'd never thought she was gay.

That all changed in graduate school.

Most parents have probably had the question flicker across their minds at one time or another: "Could my child be gay?"

Even if you've had no reason to wonder, it's possible that your all-boy football player or pretty sparkly princess ballerina may come out to you one day. And if they do, there's a right way to handle it and a wrong way.

Laura, one of the two moms profiled in Mya and Her Moms experienced both when she came out as a senior in high school, as she explains in the video below. She hadn't intended to do so -- she had a boyfriend she loved, although platonically, and just never thought being gay and out was an option for her despite the fact that she had always known she was.

Then came the phone conversation between her and another girl. Laura's mom overheard her telling her girlfriend she loved her, and confronted her daughter.

I can't be the only mom who watches every episode of Mya and Her Moms with a big ol' grin on my face. Yup, the two lesbians moms raise their little girl just like the rest of us. And just like the rest of us, there is one great debate in their house. Do you let the kid win at games or not?

Eight-year-old Mya has it both ways, depending on which parent she's with. One mom plays games that are all about education ... and there is no winner or loser. The other mom lets her let out her competitive spirit.

So what happens in our house? I am putting it out on the Internet now, fully aware that one day she will Google herself and find the evidence to use against me in therapy.
