Moms Matter 2012

pulpitMitt Romney is the closest a Mormon has ever gotten to the presidency in the history of this great country. Which isn’t really very surprising, considering that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been around for less time than the United States of America.

As a Bible-thumping Christian, I’m often asked about how I feel about a Mormon in the White House. My answer is always the same … I’m sorry, what?

I don’t really care what faith our president chooses to practice, so long as it doesn’t interfere with his leadership of the nation. Baptist, Mormon, Catholic, Jewish, Agnostic … it does it matter, so long as the leader of our country enacts sane fiscal policies and is a good Commander in Chief.

New Ketchup Bottle Invention Gets the Good Stuff Out Faster (VIDEO)

liquiglideEveryone, now we have two reasons to celebrate this weekend. They figured out how to fix ketchup! To be exact, scientists have created a bottle that lets the ketchup just slide out -- instead of making you smack the bottom to get those last few glugs out.

Introducing LiquiGlide, a surface coating that sends ketchup along its merry way, out of the plastic or glass bottle and right next to that still-warm pile of French fries.

Oh, one little hitch -- you can't get a LiquiGlide bottle just yet.

'Disoriented' American Airlines Passenger Restrained in Miami

Another day, another strange airline occurrence with a passenger. I mean, is it getting to be a regular thing? Has this trend peaked yet? What's going on? Today, reports had it that a passenger on an American Airlines flight from Jamaica had to be restrained after rushing towards the cockpit after the flight landed in Miami.

Apparently it was, once again, the passengers who got up and showed the "disoriented" male what's what. Yep, they weren't gonna let no one have their way with the cockpit, not on their watch, no sirree bob. You just don't get away with being wacky on planes anymore!

Why Did Etan Patz's Alleged Killer Pedro Hernandez Kidnap & Murder the 6-Year-Old? (VIDEO)

pedro hernandez etan patzIt's been 33 years since 6-year-old boy Etan Patz disappeared, and although he was declared legally dead in 2001, the mystery of what happened to him is still haunting the nation. That's likely because a former bodega stock clerk named Pedro Hernández has confessed to and been charged with Patz's murder, but so many questions about the incident remain.

Now 51, Hernández was 18 years old, working at a small grocery store in the New York neighborhood of SoHo, when Patz walked by on his way to his school bus stop. Hernández allegedly told police that he used a soda to lure the boy down to the basement, then strangled him, bagging and discarding the boy's body next to a pile of trash. So sick and twisted and all kinds of heartbreaking. And yet, almost making matters worse is that we still don't know why?

Extramarital Affair May Have Driven Woman to Kill Her 2 Children

Posted by Kiri Blakeley
on May 25, 2012 at 12:53 PM

There is never any excuse for a mother killing her children, but as far back as Medea, women have taken the lives of their children in revenge for their husband betraying them with another woman. That may have been what was behind the tragedy that unfolded in Tacony, Pennsylvania yesterday. A man, Ron Smalls, frantically called police to report that his youngest children, 1-and-a-half-year-old twins named Adam and Eve, were dead, apparently by suffocation. He also reported that his wife, Stacey Smalls, had tried to poison their 4-year-old. But she is okay.

The wife had also made numerous attempts to kill herself, and had left behind a suicide note implicating her husband in having an affair with a family member.

Tragic Death of Bullied 7-Year-Old Leaves All Moms Feeling Helpless

Posted by Kiri Blakeley
on May 25, 2012 at 12:09 PM

No mother wants to ever have to fathom her child committing suicide, but when that child is a mere baby, it dwells in the realm of horrifically, mind-bogglingly tragic. A 7-year-old boy in Detroit was found hanging by a belt from a bunkbed in the home he shared with his mother and sisters. Doubly tragic, it was his 14-year-old sister who discovered him. Police say that the boy had previously expressed a desire to harm himself, and had been depressed about being bullied at school, his parents' recent separation, and being the only boy in a large family of sisters. Police do not suspect any foul play.

Ironically, his mother was trying to help him, and had last seen him alive when she went to go visit their pastor to discuss his depression.

trafficWe're so close to the start of our long Memorial Day weekend, we can almost taste it. Aaaand it tastes like barbecue, beer, and exhaust. Just as Mem Day is famous for its backyard cookouts, it's just as notorious for its traffic. It's been reported that roads will only be slightly busier this year than last, despite the dip in gas prices, but it's still a good idea to prepare to hurry up and wait if you decide to take any main throughway. Over 34 million Americans will travel 50 or more miles from home starting Thursday, May 24 through Monday, May 28. That's a lot of cars.

So! Need some tips for traveling? Here's a list of 5 must-dos if you're looking to stay sane this holiday weekend.

Arrest in Etan Patz Kidnapping Case Gives Parents Little Comfort

Posted by Jeanne Sager

Etan Patz missing posterI really want to look at the arrest in the decades old Etan Patz case as good news. I'm sure the parents of the little boy who went missing 33 years ago, only to become the first ever "face on the milk carton" are breathing easier today. But what about the rest of us? Does the confession from Pedro Hernandez really make life easier on the rest of us parents?

It's a selfish way to look at this whole thing, I know. Etan Patz' parents have been living with the horror of having said goodbye to their little boy one May day in 1979 and then never seeing him again. The pain is theirs and theirs alone. Except, not really.

Craziest Cat Lady Ever Makes Cat Stew

Posted by Kiri Blakeley
on May 25, 2012 at 11:07 AM

This is just so many kinds of wrong, I can't even count all of the kinds of wrong this is. An 81-year-old woman in Whittman, Arizona starts out with the usual story. Nothing you haven't seen on Confessions: Animal Hoarding. The woman, Lucienne Touboul, was hoarding at least 64 cats, and was subsequently charged with animal neglect and cruelty charges in 26 of those cases. Now, sometimes I do feel bad for women who hoard (men do it too, but with cats it's often women). Believe it or not, a lot of these women have a good heart and are trying to help rescue strays. They start out well, but they get in over their head, rescue too many, and then can't care for them all.

But this woman goes beyond that. She brings it where I haven't heard of any animal hoarder bringing it before. She brings it all the way down to Crazy Town.
