POSTS WITH TAG: child custody

A military dad who is currently deployed on a submarine in the Pacific Ocean has reportedly been ordered by a judge to turn his 6-year-old daughter, for whom he has custody, over to her mother while he's away -- or else.

Navy submariner Matthew Hindes has been ordered by a judge to attend a mandatory court hearing in Michigan next week or face contempt, even though he's miles away and it's obviously not going to be possible for him to return for a court appearance.

Hindes, who was granted full custody of 6-year-old Kaylee, left her in his current wife's care while he was away and argues that the best place for his child is with her stepmom Benita-lynn Hindes at their home in Washington. Despite the fact that Hindes insists Kaylee was taken away from her biological mom Angela by Child Services for neglect, the court is holding firm that the little girl belongs with her mother while dad is deployed overseas.

It's been almost five months since Paul Walker's untimely passing, and the battle for custody of his 15-year-old daughter, Meadow, may have come to an end.

Paul Walker had originally granted guardianship of his daughter to his mother, Cheryl Walker, and had left his entire $16 million fortune to the teen. Just last month, Paul's mother made the official move and filed for guardianship of Meadow. But she has now requested that her petition for guardianship be dismissed, and it could all be for the best.

Actor Paul Walker's daughter Meadow Walker has not had it easy these past few months. First her father dies, then the teen finds out she'll have to uproot and go live with grandma if she wants her giant inheritance, throwing her right in the middle of an epic custody war. But it looks like cooler heads are prevailing. Finally!

Cheryl Walker, Paul's mom, may have gotten custody of her granddaughter in the Fast and Furious star's will, but the girl's mom, Rebecca Soteros, may not be losing her child after all.

Shanesha TaylorLast week, Shanesha Taylor left her children, ages 2 and 6, in her Dodge Durango. The windows were cracked and the doors were locked when a passerby heard the baby crying from the backseat and reported the unsupervised little ones to the authorities. When Taylor returned, the police were waiting for her in the parking lot of the office complex she left her truck in.

She explained that she had been on a job interview and didn’t have anyone to watch her kids while she was there. The 35-year-old was arrested, charged with child abuse, and photographed in what may be the most heartbreaking mugshot I’ve seen in years.

A teen mother who gave birth in her bathtub is being accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a dumpster, but in a surprising turn of events, it appears likely the young mom may end up getting custody of her son anyway. The little boy's story made headlines recently when a construction worker discovered the baby, with his umbilical cord still attached, in a plastic bag in the trash. The Good Samaritan has been credited with saving the little guy's life, and the mother has decided to name the child Carlos in his honor.

Yup, that's right, the mother still has rights to name her child. In fact, under Texas law, she still has a ton of rights ... regardless of the callous way in which cops say she abandoned the child.

Despite what the most opinionated, outspoken people might have us think, I'm not sure it's actually possible to definitively prove one parenting style is superior to another. Attachment parenting vs free-range kids, co-sleeping vs crying it out, commercially packaged baby purées vs the thing where you chew up organic foods and gently spit them into your child's mouth … really, it all comes down to personal choice. Except, of course, when the legal system gets involved -- which is what recently happened with an overly "permissive" mom.

A High Court judge recently decided that a British mother had failed her children by letting them play video games for hours on end, not enforcing their bedtimes, and that ultimately she treated them more like a friend than a parent. The ruling: custody of her 11- and 14-year-old sons went to their father, who is much more in favor of "structure, boundaries and discipline."

Who doesn’t love a good underdog story? Maybe that’s why the news that Teen Mom reality stars Amber Portwood and Gary Shirley took their daughter Leah to Disney on Ice! over the weekend makes me so happy.

Because the best part of this underdog story is the fact that Amber and Gary have come together for the sake of their daughter. I love when parents actually put their children first, especially when they have such a sordid, violent past.

The other day I was driving my two daughters home from school, and the kindergartener asked me with all serious when we were going to move back to Daddy’s house and be a family again.

The fifth of never. Ok, I kept that answer to myself and gently explained to her (again) that Mommy and Daddy aren’t getting back together, that we love her and her sister very much, but that we made each other too crazy to live together.

Then came her very small voice, “But Mommy … Daddy says it’s your fault.”

The Amber Portwood we're seeing these days is nothing like the girl we remember from Teen Mom. She's out of prison, off the drugs, and actually owning up to all that she did to screw up her own life. But no matter how far she's come, it doesn't seem to be enough for ex-boyfriend Gary Shirley. He knows Amber wants to share custody of daughter Leah ... and he's not having it!

The single dad has come out to say he wants to protect his 5-year-old, and to do that, he's going to keep the little girl's mom at bay. Poor guy is between a rock and a hard place here, isn't he?

Kate Winslet is an insanely talented actress. She's also super intelligent, as any interview you see or read with her will quickly make clear. She's also the proud mom of three children. So why is one organization making it their business to publicly shame her on the streets of London this holiday season?

Because her three children have three different fathers, and all three of her children live with her full-time. I'm sorry, I wasn't aware we were still living in the Victorian era where a woman's sexual past could "ruin" her reputation. Kate wasn't aware of this either -- which is why she's suing the organization in question, Fathers4Justice.
