If you had to make a list of the best children's books of all time, what would be on it?
A columnist in New York recently offered a list of what he thinks are the best kids' books ever. Sure, it's a good place to start, but I think he's missing a bunch:
- Charlotte's Web
- The Hardy Boys series
- Wind in the Willows
- The Freddy the Pig series
- The Alex Rider series
- The Harry Potter series
- Gentle Ben
- Anne of Green Gables
- The Dog Who Wouldn't Be
- Little Lord Fauntleroy
- On to Oregon
- The Prince and the Pauper
- Lad, a Dog
Where's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Island of the Blue Dolphins, and Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle? And how can you have a list of the best children's books without Ramona the Pest?
What do you think he's missing? What would be on your list of best kids' books?

Treasure Island, Captains Courageous, Kim. The Secret Garden and A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett - the books, NOT the movies.
Oh - and the Berenstain Bear series...
My list is more toddler geared....but Goodnight Moon, of course. All of the Sandra Boynton books. My favorite when I was little was anything by Shel Silverstein.
harry potter series, anne of green gables on my list too.
Where the wild things are! Best book ever.
Who else remembers that book "How to eat Fried Worms"?
Where's the Bible Stories!?? I think those would top any other...
And Harry Potter is up there but not Noahs Ark? Whoa. I find this sad.
This list is appalling - do you think he REALLY meant it to be THE best kids' books EVER? Maybe he was just trying to give more press to a few of these.
My picks as a former YA librarian: Peter Pan, Robinson Crusoe, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, The Secret Garden, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, the Laura Ingalls Wilder series (Little House on the Prarie, et al), A Wrinkle in Time, The Thief (Megan Whalen Turner), Out of the Dust, Holes, Bridge to Terabithia, The Giver, Ender's Game, The Borrowers.
I actually haven't read most of those. I loved the Romona books as a kid along with anything by Judy Blume. Bridge to Terabithia was my all time favorite book as a kid (I read it when I was 8 or 9 and remember crying at the end). The Little House books were favorites, too, although I only got through the first few (they were my aunt's and I had to leave before I could finish all of them). Obviously my list is girl oriented, lol.
I'm trying to get my oldest dd to read these books. So far all she will look at are the Ramona books. She's 9 and at a 5th or 6th grade reading level but refuses to read anything harder then a 2nd grade level (she's going into 4th grade). It's sad.
Amen Mrs. Soule...I made a list in my head as I read the poster's list and it mirrored yours!! I'd add Lord of the Flies..my 12 year old & I read it and then watched the movie ~ the old black and white one. I'd also add Sounder, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry..just to name a few.
