I was a rebellious teenager once. Yes, I was. So I didn't really flinch when I read that Miley Cyrus is sporting a new nose piercing. It's cute and she's a superstar...so what...
But I have to say I'm flabbergasted by Kimberley Vlaminck, the Belgian teenager who got 56 stars tattooed on her face (and lied that she was asleep when it happened). Holy moley!
Beyond the obvious cosmetic horror of seeing your child with 56 tattoos on her face, I'm thinking I might have to do a little emotional intervention. I mean, teens do tend to make some insane choices (it's chemical; they can't help it). But what would prompt a young woman to do this to her face? I mean, really? I would want to look a little deeper into that one.
There used to be a man who checked IDs at a bar I went to in my 20s. He had giant spider webs tattooed around his eyes. I always wondered what his mother had to say about those tattoos.
What do you think about teens getting body piercings and tattoos? At what point would you worry that your teen had gone far beyond typical teen-aged rebelliousness?

wow that is scary my daughter is sixteen and she wants tatoosi told her no and her dad the same but she says when im 18 and i still told her no with oercings my hubby has no problem anything in the ears are fine not the face but ooooooooo welll kids will be kids but that girl must of had some majore issues
Yeah I also wouldn't buy the 'I was sleeping excuse' mainly because I have 13 decent sized tattoos in various places on my body including my ears and there is no way in hell you wouldn't feel it!! Especially on the temple or cheek bones I would imagine would very sensitive! I don't know what the laws governing the age to legally get tattooed but this is obviously proffesional and makes me wonder what adult tattoo artist in their right mind would do this to a teenage girl! Many of the artists I know wouldn't even do this on an adult! At least not without making sure they give it a lot of thought!
I was one of those teens, I pierced my own ears several times and my nose twice and gave my self a couple homemade tattoos none of which were bigger than a quater and all in places I could hide. I was very rebellious and those were just added proof of that. I did also get my belly button pierced (with my mothers concent and presence) for my 17th birthday.
I think this is definate cause for worry and would deffinatly be getting some evaluations done.
they will only get them if they are allowed, at least under the age of 18 anyway. and my kids will not get any of those until they are 18.
My husband is a tattoo artist, I am covered in tattoos and he is covered in tattoos AND piercings so I don't have much to say other than I would NEVER get a face tattoo. I don't like them.
To each their own, but a face tattoo at such a young age seems to me to be a very bad decision. I feel bad for this girl -- she is young and made a poor choice that will be difficult and painful to remove.
I have been discriminated against for the tattoos I have and when I was younger I had numerous visible piercings and was discriminated against for those as well. I am just not one to judge based on tattoos and piercings.
When my kids are teens, they will be allowed to get tattoos and piercings if that's what they want. I have them, my husband has them. And we plan on bringing them up in a home where they won't be afraid to talk to us about things like this. (That's our hope, at least.) Though rebelling against us would be them wearing a suit and tie and becoming a lawyer or something, so who knows? :)
At ANY age, you can make good and bad choices regarding body modification and art.
I'd never tattoo my face, and that girl was just an idiot who lied because her Daddy got mad at her for being an idiot. Now she'll be known FOREVER as "that dumbass who tattooed her face and lied about it."
Piercings are becoming more and more socially acceptable. It's even common to see VERY upscale women with tiny nose screws or tight-fitting, small gauge eyebrow barbells. Decades ago, that was unfathomable.
Just like anything else you do, there's going to be things that are flattering, things that are not, things that look ridiculous and things that look just plain BAD... and people who are trying to go overboard to make some kind of statement.
I had my nose pierced when I was in 6th grade, and by the time I turned 17, had 20+ piercings, and my mom even paid for my sun on the back of my neck tattoo as a 17th birthday present. It's tasteful, timeless and non-offensive... and also easily covered by a collar or wearing my hair down. My ankle, socks or pants cover it. No big deal!
I told my daughter that she may get piercings as soon as shes done really growing. That way it wont interfere with any development, and who am I to say no- I have two lip piercings and 18 others (mostly in my ears). You can always take a piercing out.
As for tattoos, again I can't really so no way- I have 21 and I'm getting more. But I can put reasonable restrictions on them, such as none until you are 18. I was 15 when I got my first and I regretted it big time. I got it covered after she was born.
I hate tattoos...period. It's one thing to have a discreet butterfly on your bum...but...past that...not into it...facial piercings are about the same for me...when I was a kid...I was so common sensical about those things...I was always afraid of how it would look as I aged...don't ask me why I thought of that at 16...but I did...so I'm hoping my dd's tattoo decals will suffice as she gets this out of her system!
I think that it should be just like liqour you have to be 21. Its okay to get tattoos but you have to be mature and responsible enough to realize that its on for life. I waited two years before I got all my tattoos. and the next batch I get I will be waiting another year because I want to make sure that this is something that I will still be into 40 years from now. But the young, and impulsive sheeples give us a bad name.
