My son just had another bullying incident at school today. A kid slapped him in the face. I'm exhausted by the whole thing. For goodness sake, he's only 5 and in kindergarten. We've only just begun. I'm fighting tears thinking about how hard my little guy tries to fit in, how much he wants to be a part of the "in" crowd in his class. I know there's an in crowd, because I hear their names nightly. But the stories I hear are usually about my son being left out and ignored.
I have to admit, I have no real personal point of reference for what my son is enduring. As far back as I can remember, I was always pretty popular at school. I wasn't a mean girl, but it wasn't like I would just hang out with "anyone" either. Well, now my son is an "anyone," and it just all has me thinking about popularity and it's perceived importance.
How important is popularity to you? Do you want you kids to be popular? In the scheme of things, does popularity matter?
