This anonymous mother has my exact situation, so I totally identify when she says her son is, "5.5 and smart. He is starting to read, can add, subtract small numbers, but he consistently writes a few numbers and letters backwards. Could it be dyslexia?"
My own son not only inverts letters sometimes, but on occasion, he even writes his name in reverse (esrever)!
proud2Bmomma thinks her 6-year old daughter may be dyslexic; her husband has the diagnosis-- and although her daughter is bright, she has problems reading and with penmanship.
In reality, there are a lot of us moms who worry about this condition, some with good reason, but most of us, unnecessarily.
Dr. Laura Bailet, Executive Director of the Nemours Bright Start! Dyslexia Initiative, says that "mirror writing" (what my kid does) and letter reversal are not red flags at all. But she adds that in preschool and elementary school children, some signs of dyslexia include difficulty with:
- Learning to talk
- Pronouncing longer words
- Rhyming
- Learning the alphabet, days of the week, colors, shapes and numbers
- Learning to read and write his or her name
- Learning the connection between letters and sounds
- Decoding simple words
- Using ‘b' and ‘d' accurately
- Reading and spelling words with the correct letter sequence - for example, ‘top' versus ‘pot'
- Handwriting and fine-motor coordination
In older children and teens, these same signs may still be present. In addition, they probably will:
- Read and spell far below grade level
- Avoid reading and writing
- Work slowly on reading and writing assignments and tests
- Struggle with learning a foreign language
It may help to know that one in five Americans has reading difficulties. The earlier you intervene, the faster your child will be on the way to reading. As Dr. Bailet mentioned, "It's never too late to learn to read."

Glad I read this. I think I can rule out dyslexia for my DD 6yrs old. She sometimes writes b or d backwords, she also writes 3 and 5 backwords, and a couple of other numbers or letters. She was talking early and has a great vocab though, she also is reading above grade level, but her handwritting is not up to par. She slants and her words and sentances go up or down instead of staying in a straight line. her letter size will vary within one word. For example a small sized T and H, then a large size E, for THE. Since she doesn't ever spell a whole word backwords and she has no trouble with reading or talking, I guess it is not Dyslexia. That is good news. Thanks for the post!
A true diagnosis of dyslexia cannot be determined until approximately 8yos; bc writing letters backwards at a young age is a developmental level issue not learning diability issue.
I suggest, continuous coaching and working with the child until about late second grade early third. No change then seek educational assessment/evaluation assistance via the school or at a private agency.

Thanks for this. I am actually still concerned about dyslexia with my daughter. I brought it up to her teacher but she didn't seem too concerned about it.
THANK YOU!!! My situation is almost identical to AprilD32. My 6 year old DD is very bright and advanced. She gets some letters and numbers backwards (the same ones) and size is sometimes an issue. Recently they started working on greater than less than in math. She got them all right execpt for numbers that were reveresed like 79 and 97. For all of those problems she put equal. That along with all the letters and numbers really worried me.
We originally thought my 7yr old son was dyslexic, so we took him to a vision specialist, whom his eye doctor recommended. Dr. Dean comes VERY highly recommended. We found out through several tests & alot of time waiting that he has "cognitive" problems. Apparently, the information that he sees is getting mixed up as it goes to his brain, then even more mixed up as it comes back out. It's different from dyslexia b/c he can process short burst of information, ie: addition & subtraction problems, reading short text, reading & writing single or double digit numbers. The doc says that my son is a VERY intelligent child, he just gets frustrated b/c he has trouble processing anything more than a few sentences at a time. His eyes also do not focus at the same time. We are going for a "Cognitive Test" next week to see how much info he is ACTUALLY retaining & understanding. It's so frustrating for us and even more so for him. We have had to be VERY, VERy patient with him. But at least now we know it's a medical issue, not just a behavioral issue. If you think your child may have the same symtoms, please feel free to contact me & maybe I can explain a little better and maybe give you a referral for a doc. Our doc says it's gonna be a LONG, LONG process, but it will all be worth it, if we can help him.

i don't know ... is it dyslexia, add or adhd .. I recently had an IEP confrence .. but they won't tell me what they think.... they just said thats what the tests are for and that they'll look into my request . so i won't know for sure until may..
There are several forms of Dyslexia and some do not include seeing things backwards. My daughter has Dyslexic Disgraphia and you mentioned nothing about that or it's symptoms
I have Dyslexia as does my DD...... This is a great post. I hope that it helps some parents get their children the help that they need!
I have just discovered an incredible free resource for parents and educators that deal with Dylexic children. It has been a great comfort to my husband and I as we have dealt with our sons dyslexia.Perhaps it can help some of you.http://pathwaysdyslexianetwork.com/
