My oldest son has dreadlocks in his hair; he wanted them for a whole year before we started the locking process, and today, at about 4 inches long, he wears them quite proudly. Sure, they are gorgeous (at least to me!) but my fear now that he is in public school is a random attack of...dreaded lice! CM newcomer AmyNB is living my worst nightmare.
Not one, but three of her daughters have the pesky condition, and she's totally desperate for help. There's a lot of info out there on lice; pharmaceutical treatments, home remedies, etc. But you can be pretty sure that on this one, moms know best. Any sound advice for AmyNB or any other mom who suddenly finds herself on lice patrol?

When I was a kid I got lice and I still have nightmares of that comb my mother needed to use after she washed my hair ... YUCK! I dread the notices that come home from school that alert us a kid in the class had lice!!! Good luck AmyNB... thinking of you....
I have had to deal with this problem on and off during my Dd's school years. The best product i have found that actually has killed the lice and is safe and natural is Lice-Free. Usually vaccuming, and treating all bedding and firniture with a lice spray gets the rest. Repeated treatments are always necassary, no matter how good the products are. it is not easy to get rid of the little buggers, you have to be diligent. And always make sure your kids know to never share brushes hats or other garments at school or elsewhere with thier friends.
in reference to putitoutthere's comment..i have never heard of bactrum or any antibiotic used in killing lice.....but i am going to ask my dd's pediatrician about it..sounds much easier
My kids got it every other weekend for 2 years when they came home from their dads. He refused to believe it was coming from his new wifes kids. They were being sent home from school the week before my kids got there and he didnt know it. The best way to get rid of them is to have the child sit under a bright light after treatment and go through sections of hair at a time. Takes a long time. But you have to be able to see the nits. To this day when one of my kids scratches their head I have to take a look. Their 17 and 19. And have hard feelings toward their dad about it.
Our schools wont send out notes now about lice anymore.
i have three little boys, and we';ve been through lice twice. my husband even cut off all his dreadlocks it got so bad. I've found (through some research) that large amounts of zinc will kill the lice themselves. therefore, we all use a zinc-included shampoo such as head and shoulders on a weekly basis. We havent gotten them again since, and it has been a few years. also, after washing with a zinc shampoo, slather their head in vasoline or hai gel, and cover their head with a shower cap for a few hairs, then comb with a lice comb, every inch.(obviously rinse your hair :) ) If you do this every day for at least two weeks, the lice should be gone. also, dont forget to clean, vaccum, and laundry every day. dont forget hats, scarves, anything that will ome into contact with. any stuffed animals should be kept in plastic bags for about a month, then put in the dryer for a little while. hope this helps! also, hight heat kills lice and eggs.
My oldest had lice once; our health-food store recommended that we use tea-tree oil shampoo after we had gotten rid of the lice because the lice tend not to infest people who use it. It won't get rid of them, but it seems to keep them away.
The good news is that even though the school has had multiple problems with lice since then (knock tea-tree wood) my kids have been spared the bugs.
My nieces had lice on and off for about a year when they were younger. My sister tried everything from the shampoos to the mayonaise with the cap to getting their hair cut short. (One of my neices was absolutely traumatzied because she loved her long hair) and they'd go away only to come back the next week. The only thing she found that worked was to go through their hair every single night with a fine tooth comb. It sucked for her and for the kids but that's what she had to do.
My son had them once about three years ago, I shaved his head and that was it. I'll do it again if he gets them again.
My kindergartner got lice last yr. We tried the traditional over-the-counter remedies, only to find that if repeated too often they can cause brain toxicity! (WTH?!?) So I went to the health food store in search of something natural. What I found there was the tea tree oil (for prevention), and the ladies there were so nice and helpful! Together we googled home remedies and came up with OLIVE OILof all things! My girl has long, thick hair, and let me tell you, the olive oil works!! All you have to do is soak their hair in it, smothering the bugs. Clip it up and place a towel around the child's shoulders to prevent clothing stains and have them sit with it on for 30 min. (I put Allysa at the kitchen table with some crayons and coloring books.) Then wash it out with regular dawn dish-washing liquid. Repeat every other day for about a week and the bugs will disappear! We have not had any problems since...knock on wood!
Hope this helps! :0)
Now you have the getting rid of them. What to do to keep the kids from getting lice. Hair Spray. the lice for whatever reason doesn't like hair spray or it keeps them from latching on. All I know is after 5 Kids and lice on the kids four different times. It does work. The little ones have kept from getting them when there has been an outbreak at school.
