Scaredmommy08 is infuriated! Her kindergarten daughter has had a rough year. Pink eye, strep throat and the flu--twice. But now, as a result of keeping her child home when she was sick (which the school advised in the beginning of the year), she is being reprimanded for her daughter's absences, and there are threats of being reported to the Truancy Board.
Is there anyone who has experience with this kind of school miscommunication? What should Scaredmommy08 do?

Get a note from your doctor that states the child was really sick and could not attend school until such and such. I am a teacher and if the child is out a lot, my school require a doctor's note. The truancy board will not take action if the child was excused by a doctor.
Our local schools only "allow" two unexcused absences for any age...if a child is sick, you must provide a doctor's note saying that they were sick in order for the absence to be excused. Nevermind the fact that about 75% of our local community is without insurance due to major factory layoffs and the ONE doctor's office for the community often has a minimum of a 3day wait to be seen...they won't backdate a sick note either. Schools pulling crap like this is why so many parents are homeschooling now....
I would suggest getting a note from the doctor... I'm sure then that things will be fine. A child truly being sick is one thing. BUT... there are too many kids that miss too much school for absolutely no reason. I think it's important that rules such as this one are in place to avoid such things from happening. I hope scaredmommy08's child has better luck the rest of the school year and stays healthy :)
Is it a law for the child to go to kindergarten in your state? I know in mine, kindergarten is suggested, but not required.
This sucks. Definately speak with her doctor. I had to repeat Kindergarten due to missed days, even though I was ahead of everyone in the class. It broke my heart!
Well first of all I would advise her to look up the compulsory age of attendance for the state she lives in. I know I live in Illinois and the age is 7 which means before that you can't be held truant because by law you don't have to be there. Also if she has taken her daughter to see the dr and has documents proving the illnesses they will dismiss it all.
and PS- Did ya all know Kindergaten isn't mandatory she could just write a letter stating she is going to remove her daughter from the school and then enroll her in 1st grade next year
It's important to know the school district's attendance laws. For example, our district allows up to 20 days absent througout the school year. More than that, regardless of the reason, and they will hold a child back from progression to the next grade. Prolonged absences or repeated absence requires a doctor's note.
We know a child that had to repeat 1st grade for being out more than the 20-days stipulated. This child has an auto-immune disorder and spent many of her 'out' days in a children's hospital. Even with the doctor's notes, however, she still exceed what the school felt was enough 'in class' days to be able to competently meet the requirements to go up to the next grade. They understood her health issues and worked with her - but after so many days, even recommending some of those absencses, they simply couldn't pass her.
Don't be scared, mommy. Do some homework and check out the school district's attendance policy and as someone suggested the state guidelines, too. I don't know exactly what the truancy board is, but if your daughter was under a dr's care, even a phone call, see if you can get a note from them. Prescriptions records from the pharmacy. Talk to the principal and see where they're coming from. And make sure from this day on you always send in a note regarding even a half day's absence--and keep a copy. Schools are really cracking down on attendance due to state requirements and lame parents always keeping their kids out just because. Good luck, I hope this turns out well for you and your little one!!
Good advice above... the Documentation of the reason for Absences... but, The Mom should have been Communicating with the Principal.... even meeting in her office..... There are Rules and There are Laws... and I'm sure the School are required to 'Report'.... -- The mom was obviously Young and New to the School System.... Will need to Remember this in the Future....... A Junior High Kid, got really sick with meningitis, not the real serious one, but The school, got involved on that too... and was going to make the kid Repeat the Whole School Year..... I Think All it takes it Communication and Documentation to avoid these situations.... You have to Respect the Schools...
My state will take you to court if your child misses more than 10 days per YEAR. If she was really sick she should have a doctor's note and so it shouldn't be a problem
