Oklahoma City Police Department/FacebookPolice are seeking the public's help in identifying a man who brazenly tried to abduct an 8-year-old at a school wrestling competition Friday evening. The photos, released by the Oklahoma City Police Department, would scare the daylights out of any parent. But how this brave child escaped is a lesson all moms and dads should share with their kids.
Chilling surveillance photos show a man, dressed in a vest, sweatpants, and a hat, lift the boy up off the ground from behind and attempt to walk off with him. Another child looks on as the boy, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt, appears to put up a fight. Take a look:
Police captioned the photo: "As you can see from the photos, a man picked up an eight year-old child and tried to walk away with him. When the child began to kick and scream, the man put the child down and left."
What that courageous young child did could mean the difference between life and death. This frightening news, which, thankfully, has a happy outcome, is such an important reminder to scream for help should a stranger approach. Calling attention to the possible abduction could be enough to stop it as it was in this case.
KidsHealth.org offers strategies that could help prevent an abduction, including: "Run away and scream if someone follows them or tries to force them into a car."
Even if you're walking in a crowded venue like a shopping mall or grocery store, calling out for help or using language like, "This isn't my mom or dad, help me!" could be enough to scare off an attacker.
Though it's terrifying to think about, arming kids will the tools they could use should the unthinkable happen could be the key to survival.
