I Saw REAL Paranormal Activity on My Baby's Video Monitor

What you are about to read is totally REAL and creepier than a Hollywood horror movie. Welcome to Scary Story Week on The Stir ...

Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you. I'm not the type of person who believes in "ghost stories." Or who's superstitious. Or who reads my horoscope. Ever. I'm more a person of logic. And although I certainly think there's something beyond the right here, right now, I just don't think it works that way. That way, of course, being shows like Paranormal State and Ghost Hunters.

But last Friday, everything I thought I knew was challenged. And I just might be a convert now.

I was sitting on the couch, zoning out to 20/20, surely watching something about how a wife allegedly murdered her husband, or how a husband allegedly murdered his wife. My own husband was sitting beside me and had fallen asleep. My 6-month-old daughter, who I had put to bed a good 2 1/2 hours earlier, was upstairs in her room sleeping as well. All was peaceful.

Now, before I get into the "scary" part of my story, I should tell you. Currently, my husband, baby, and I are staying with my father. The lease on our (one-bedroom) apartment was up, and we decided we wanted to move into a house, so while we save up, we're living with my dad. Also, my mother, whom I was very close with, died 2 1/2 years ago. Since she's passed, I really haven't had any "contact" with her. There have been moments here and there, where I thought I spotted a rainbow and then didn't, or thought I quickly felt her presence. But nothing particularly note-worthy. Also, might be worth mentioning, I'm the only person in my immediate family who hasn't visited a medium to try to contact her. Because to me, it kinda seems like a scam.

Anyway, I'm sitting there, half-watching this show, half-thinking about how I want one of those not-very-tasty vegan cookies I bought earlier, when it happened. I hear my daughter's mobile.

Now, I don't know how many of you out there have video monitors for your children, but let me say this: They're terrifying looking. The way the image appears when in "night-vision" looks exactly like the Paranormal Activity cameras, and every once in a while, it'll even do that buzz/flicker thing that makes it even more scary.

At first, it doesn't register. Like most parents, I've learned to overlook certain noises -- the mobile being one of them, as it's never been cause for alarm. It wasn't until after a few moments that I realize what the hell is happening. The video monitor is next to me, but it's facing the opposite way. When I realize what I'm hearing, I grab it and slowly turn it around. And I see it.

My daughter is peacefully sleeping in her crib, but the sea-themed mobile above her is going around and around and around, as if I had just wound it up. Children's music, plus Paranormal Activity-looking monitor = No thanks.

"The f**k?" I say, and I wake up my husband.

"Look! Look what's going on! Her mobile is spinning!"

My husband, who, like most husbands, really isn't scared of much, widens his eyes and then looks at me and sort of nervously smirks.

"That's pretty freaky," he says.

"Go up!" I tell him.

So, he goes upstairs, and I follow him. We enter my daughter's room -- which didn't feel "weird" or like their were "bad vibes" present -- and he tries to stop the mobile, which is 100 percent manual (you have to crank it). And he can't. He tries doing the fast-spin move, but the thing just keeps on turning and singing. Brahm's lullaby. Do-do-doo ... do-do-doo ... do-do-DO-do-do-do-do ... Finally, he removes the entire mobile from the baby's crib, and as soon as we leave her room, it stops.

I know.

It wasn't until a little while later (after I got un-freaked out) that it dawned on me. That very well could have been my mother. After all, we're in her house. Perhaps she was just "playing" with her grand-daughter, whom I know she loves very much. (Side note: The next morning, my dog kept staring at my mother's picture, and barking and wagging his tail.) Or maybe it was something else? Something more logical -- like a broken mobile? (Although, the mobile is fine now.) In this case -- I'm choosing to believe it was my mother. Because, well, I want to.

However. That said, I do have this message for my sweet and amazing mother, who knows me so well: Mom. You know I love you. And am thrilled to have you around in any way you choose to manifest. But would it have been so hard to not do the scary children's music thing and the freaky monitor? That was insane!

Have you ever had any supernatural encounters?
