Summer is the season that seems to make everyone smile. Who doesn't love vacations, picnics, longer days, and flip-flops? Of course, when you're a parent, summer also means daily sunscreen battles with squirmy kids, keeping track of little ones at crowded amusement parks and carnivals, and checking everyone for ticks (shudder) after a day exploring nature.

Thankfully, making some simple changes to your kids' clothes can actually save your sanity when it comes to this stuff. Here's how!

What's your best kids’ summer clothing tip?

  • Help Straps Stay Put

    1

Those straps on your daughter’s tank top or sundress too loose? Grab one of her little barrettes and hook them together in the back between her shoulder blades. The result? Straps that stay put and a chic racerback look.

  • Camouflage Stains

    2

After weekends of messy BBQs and afternoons of melting ice cream cones, a few of your kids’ shirts resemble a ready-to-wear Rorschach test. Don’t toss them out! Give those duds another life by tie-dyeing them. So easy and always in fashion.

When it comes to kids and summer style, it’s great to have a few ‘shore’ things in your lineup. We love this easy, effortless Tropical-Print Chambray Romper and bold Palm-Print Numbered Tank for girls, and classic (but cool) Poplin Bermuda for boys.

  • Pick Sun-Smart Clothes

    4

Daily sunscreen battles are a necessity when heading outside for summer fun, but ensure they are really shielded from those harmful rays by choosing clothes, hats, and swimsuits with built-in SPF. Such a simple way your kiddos can hang in the sun without worrying about that form of protection wearing off.

  • Pack an Extra Layer

    5

The weather app tells you it’s a perfect 82 degrees. However, when the sun sets, the temps drop too. Even when it’s warm weather, having a lightweight hoodie in your tote bag is key to prevent whining from chilly kiddos.

  • Buy in Bulk

    6

Sunshine plus endless kid energy equals sweaty little bodies. Sweaty little bodies create a big pile of sweaty clothes. Avoid spending every day doing laundry by stocking up on some of your kids’ favorite tees and shorts (and socks and undies). Buy in bulk to save you time and your summertime sanity.

  • Streamline Vacation Packing

    7

Those days of vacation should be your time off from some Mommy Duties, like hounding the kids to get dressed. Make your mornings in that hotel easier by packing an outfit for each kid in a separate zip-top bag, labeled with the child’s name. Each morning, they can just grab a bag from the suitcase and get dressed by themselves while you catch a few extra zzzzs.

  • Make Them Stand Out

    9

Heading to a packed amusement park or busy fairground? Be able to spot your kids in the crowd by dressing them in matching high-visibility shirts. Orange, yellow, pink, whatever color you (and they!) prefer -- just make sure it’s bright.

  • Protect Against Ticks

    10

When you think of camping, what pops into your mind first: s’mores or ticks? Though you should always do tick checks after being outside, pulling socks up over the bottoms of pants or leggings is a huge step you can take in preventing bites. Be sure to pack a pair or two in your gear for everyone, so you can all focus on the yummy parts of outdoor fun.
