My mother used to have a cartoon on the refrigerator that read something like this, “September is when millions of bright, shining, happy, laughing faces turn toward school. They belong to mothers.”
My mother loved me and my three sisters, but what a relief it must have been for her when summer was over and she had six free hours to clean the house, prepare dinner, and run all of her errands.
Life is a lot different these days. I couldn’t imagine life as a housewife any more than I could imagine my husband expecting me to iron his shirts! My mother tells me that it’s a lot harder today. I don’t know, I think it would be pretty tough staying at home with four kids. But she’s right; we seem to have so much more to juggle these days. Not only do I have to go to work every day, but when I get home, I have to transport my kids to all their activities. And kids have way more activities today than they did when I was growing up.
But back to the cartoon on the refrigerator. I’m not one of those mommies who can’t wait for summer to be over. Back-to-school time is really stressful for me.
I know that I put my own stress on my shoulders, but it’s only because I want my kids to be happy. Starting school is such an exciting time for my kids and I want everything to be perfect for them. I know I could lower my standards, but I won’t. I want them all to have new school supplies and back-to-school outfits, and though it may sound easy, it takes a lot of time and organization. I just don’t want to let them down!
A friend of mine changed my stress into success with one word:
She told me that Target was her one-stop shopping store and she rarely went anywhere else. Now I had shopped in Target plenty of times, but I had always gotten the kids’ school supplies at an office supply store. And even though I know Target has food, it had just never occurred to me to do grocery shopping anywhere but the supermarket.
But this is why we have friends!
She was so right! Not only did I get every single school supply on the list, but I was able to get my kids lots of reasonably priced, stylish clothes to start the year off with. But best of all was that I could get tons and tons of snacks and easy lunch box meals all right at Target!
I’m all for saving money, but when I can save time and money, I’m sold.
Back-to-school shopping was a breeze this year. And I owe it all to my friend, who, pardon the pun, was right on Target.
