You can use a lot of words to describe your typical 7-year-old: cute, sweet, spunky, sensitive. But "soulful" is usually one of those adjectives you save for folks who have a bit of living under their belts. Angelina Jordan from Norway defies all norms. The tot, who recently appeared on Norway's Got Talent barefoot and clad in a long white dress, brought judges to tears with her flawless rendition of Billie Holiday's "Gloomy Sunday." Her performance has since been viewed and shared by millions of people around the world, who are blown away by this little girl's tremendous voice.
It isn't often that you come across a young girl who boasts such deep alto pipes. When we listen to children sing, we're usually serenaded by sweet, high soprano voices that speak of innocence and light. Like Amy Winehouse or Adele, who we imagine possessed the same raw, sad, honest voices at her age, Angelina is able to carry this tune without breaking a sweat.
And what an odd but incredible musical choice for her. "Gloomy Sunday" isn't exactly a showtune -- the speaker in the song is lamenting the fact that her lover died and she wouldn't mind joining him in death. Yay?
Yet Angelina perfectly captures the grief and melancholy beauty of this old song. Which just makes us wonder: how can a 7-year-old do that? This little girl is about to become huge.
