Kindergarteners Caught 'Having Sex' in Bathroom -- Where Was the Teacher?!

blocksTwo 5-year-olds were found naked and having sex in their classroom's bathroom. Their teacher, Kelly Mascio, reported the incident after she found the boy and girl undressed in the kindergarten bathroom at the school in Mullica Township in south New Jersey. The children admitted that they were "having sex." Of course, we can only hope that those are the words they used to describe what they did (maybe just undressing) thinking it was "sex" in their innocence.

Still, it's terrifying to hear. When we send our kids to school, we expect the teachers to step in for us -- to make sure our kids are safe and not doing anything awful or harmful to themselves or other children. I know there are rules and that teachers cannot accompany kids into the bathroom (at least it is that way in my kids' school), but how do two children go into the bathroom together -- the bathroom inside the classroom -- and have enough time to take their clothes off? Where was the supervision?

Mascio may lose her job -- she was suspended with pay as of now. She's been teaching for 15 years, and she did report the incident immediately. The police were also called. But the Board of Education has voted to bring charges against her. They are concerned about how parents as well as the board would ever be able to trust her leadership and supervision again. Yes, exactly that.

I'm wondering how these kids were in the bathroom together without someone noticing. For that long? Long enough for them to take their clothes off and do whatever "having sex" meant to them. How does this happen? We're talking about kindergarten. These kids are just 5 years old. Something went terribly wrong with the teacher not paying attention to where her students were. Was there an aide in the classroom? Was this teacher in charge of too many students at one time and this was part of the failure to supervise?

I keep coming back to the fact that this was a bathroom that was in the classroom as opposed to a bathroom outside the classroom in a hallway. How did the teacher not know what was going on in her classroom? There are so many things that could happen in an instant and that's part of a teacher's job. She needs to know if these kids are hurting themselves, playing with scissors, cutting each other's hair, eating glue, being a bully, hitting or biting each other, even eating peanuts if they are terribly allergic. As a parent, I am trusting the teacher to make sure my kid is okay. Which is why I'm just left with more questions for this teacher, with the big one being: Where was she when this was happening? She was present but was she alert? Clearly not. Why wasn't she paying attention to what was going on around her, and why didn't she notice where the missing boy student and girl student were during this time?

The kids unsupervised! Really that's the take away. How about a society where 5 year Oldsmobile know. What sexton is! And apparently that's not that important.

This occurred on a benchmark testing day and there were kids in and out of the classroom all day. I am not excusing the lack of supervision but it was not a regular classroom day and evidently there was some confusion. I don't think it would take a long time for kids to remove clothing either so it may have been a few minutes? The bigger question that no one is asking is why a five year old would get naked and pretend to have sex in the first place. Where has at least one of the kids been exposed to this information?

Besides the lack of supervision the question is why and how are these children having sex. At this point in there life they shouldn't know what sex is. This teacher is going to lose her job but I want to know what is going on in the children's mind as well.

The bigger question for me is how 5 year olds know enough about sex to even consider engaging in the act.  Not one, but two kids knew enough to remove their clothing and "have sex" at the tender age of 5.  What have these kids been exposed to in their lives to know this much?  Yes, I realize kids learn things much younger these days as the internet, TV, etc. is so readily available to everyone.  But still......  As for the teacher, I would need to know much more, such as how many kids she's in charge of, if she has an aide, etc.  One kid could've asked permission to go to the restroom and the 2nd kid could've snuck in during the 5 seconds the teacher turned her back to write something on the chalkboard.  We don't know the scenario.  I'm hesitant to call for her head on a platter just yet.  I realize they are in charge of our kids while they are there, but they can't literally see and hear every single thing that goes on during the day.  I just have a need to know much greater details on this one...  Only my opinion - I realize others will strongly disagree and want the teacher fired on the spot.

Well, Ms. Zipp, if you bothered to read the stories to which you linked you'd see this sentence.

"She added that Sept. 30 was a highly unusual day, and children were moving in and out of Mascio’s classroom for MAPS benchmark testing."

But, you've never let facts stop you in the past, so don't start now.

I honestly would question if one or both of these children are being sexually abused at home.  At 5 years old, they shouldn't have a clue what sex is, or at least have only a very vague understanding of it (the very basic "birds and bees").  I think the familes of both children should be investigated.

either something is going on at home or at school for these kids to try to engage in sex

Yeah, blame the teacher again. Typical. You know what I want to know? Who the heck thought it was appropriate to teach their kids how sex works to that explicit degree, and then give them no lesson on when and who does it and where? More importantly, this could be a big red flag for sexual abuse going on with one of those kids, so THANK GOD she found it and reported it. Obviously she's checking on them or we never would have known they were doing this in the first place. But instead of investigating their home situation to see where this originated, we're suspending the teacher. Sounds fair (not).

Yes, the teacher should have supervised the kids better--especially if it is an irregular day. But the real question is what's going on in the homes of these two kids that they know enough about sex to try it out. Yes, there is more sex and stuff on primetime television but are these kids being exposed to porn or sexual abuse at home? This is not normal K5 behavior.

Questionable supervision aside...

We dont know that the kids had intercourse. How do we know that one of them didnt walk in on mom&dad having sex, then assume sex was naked kissing laying on top of each other? Or that the teacher/whoever caught them, didn't go "Omg! Were you having sex?!" And the kids just said yes because they had heard the word, but didn't know the meaning?

This is a case for doctors and parents to sort out, and I can only hope that one or both of those kids didn't know how actual intercourse is performed.
