Eat It or Toss It: Which School Lunches Make the Cut?

OMG 69

fed up logoSchool lunches are notorious for being unhealthy and unappetizing. Even though new nutrition guidelines for school lunch passed last year, many schools have been slow to adopt the new changes, and many students aren’t satisfied with the meals being served. Sure, some school cafeterias are serving up nutritious, appealing fare, but they seem to be in the minority.

DoSomething.org’s “Fed Up” campaign was created to help raise awareness about the school-lunch problem, but it’s not targeting school administrators or even food-service companies.

Instead, they’re going to the “trenches” and asking students to take pictures of their school’s lunches and upload them to the DoSomething.org website. Students (anyone under the age of 25; moms, that means you should encourage your kids to get involved!) will give their lunch a fun name (like “Scary-Roni!” or “I Ate This Out Of Desperation,” or, for an appealing option, “Wow -- Yummy Chicken!”) and answer a few questions about the meal. Then they’ll be able to vote on other photos (I’D TOSS IT or I’D EAT IT) and get tips on how to make real change in their school cafeteria.

Does your child buy lunch at school? Are you happy with the meals being served?

My dd brings her lunch to school.  Her school does offer healthy lunch options, but there are a lot of unhealthy choices too.

We pack lunch everyday. He has never bought lunch. He's a little picky so I like to know what he's eating.

She has always taken her lunch in the best.  But as she's getting older she's wanting to expand.  They share their menu with us each week so it makes it easier for her to choose which days she wants.

I pack a lunch for my son everyday. This way I know what he's eating, how much, and where it came from!

I usually pack lunch but I have been letting my son buy in school. The  school totally restructured the menu and it is healthy and awesome! I'm very pleased with it...lots of fruit, vegetable and salad choices...whole grain pastas....

That's a good idea!

My kids have a hard time eating the lunches at school because they are vegetarian lunches and they are not used to soy burgers etc.  But they eat parts of it, like the salad and fruit etc...which I'm glad about.

They used to buy lunch at school until the cafeteria proved completely inept with keeping track of payments made to their lunch accounts. Now they take their lunches.
