When my children attended public school, I spent the extra money on nice bento style lunch boxes... I didn't get uber crafty in what the food looked like, but I really liked how it broke up the food into separate containers and visually forced me to pay attention to what food groups I was providing my children for lunch. It is so easy to toss in a sandwich and some chips... But the small containers were perfect for portioning fruits and veggies and keeping everything pretty well contained and unsmooshed until lunch. And the crafty lunch ideas of pintrest are great for 'alternative' ideas to substitute for the standard pb&j... which isn't really welcome any more. lol

My kids eat at school, but I would consider this if they didn't.  Very good ideas!

My daughter has been using these for a couple years now. I love them. They really do help you to try to offer a variety of healthy options. I have the one all the way to the left in the big image at the top and I love it. I put the main entree in the big portion, then in the larger of the small sections I usually put a bit if hummus at the bottom and stick veggies in them and in the smaller I put some fruit. I usually add a squishers yogurt from trader joes (it's like gogourt) or some babybel cheese because I don't keep dairy for myself so I try to make sure she gets some. And she usually gets milk or water herself during lunch. It's really easy to be creative with the portions.

I'd consider getting one for homemade lunchables for my son's lunches.

I've been making my son lunch in a bento box for over two years now (since he started full time daycare). My lunches aren't nearly as lovely, but I admire the beautiful ones!

(PS I think you mean to ask if we would consider substituting a bento box for a sack lunch, and not the other way around).

I would love to be a bento mom but honestly my dd eats hot lunch every single day because they have so much to choose from and it's cheaper in the long run for us.
