Moms Take On Sexist Superhero T-Shirts (WHAM! POW!) (UPDATED)

Rant 23

sexist t-shirtsReally, Disney? Really?! As the mother of a daughter -- and a son -- of course I'm offended/disappointed in the company's line of "sexist Avengers t-shirts" for kids, including a boys' tee that says, "Be a Hero," and a girls' version with the slogan, "I Need a Hero." So are a lot of other people, apparently, considering an online petition requesting that Disney stop selling the shirts has already received approximately 6,000 signatures. I mean, the boys' shirt is actually fine with me -- a kid could do worse than to dream of becoming a hero when he grows up. It's just that the girls' shirt should say the exact same thing. Seriously, I need a hero?! What year is this again?

The petition pretty much sums it up:

We believe that women can be heroes too, and as one of the most recognizable children's brands in the world, it's especially important that Disney takes responsibility for the messages they deliver to our youngest and most vulnerable.

Please sign and share this petition to let the Disney Store know: as long they use limiting gender stereotypes to sell their products, we're #NotBuyingIt!

On the one hand, it's just a t-shirt -- but it's true, Disney IS one of the most recognizable children's brands in the world, so you'd think they would at least focus group this stuff or something. Because in addition to being offensive/disappointing, the message Disney is sending is actually contrary to the message the Avengers movies try to send. Sort of. Scarlett Johansson, hello?! The Black Widow is just as badass as any of her male counterparts.

Anyway, I'm betting Disney will yank these off the shelves soon enough. But what they should REALLY do is replace them with "Be a Hero" shirts for girls! Make up for that big whopper of a mistake.

Do you think these Avengers t-shirts are sexist?

Seriously???? Is this is the best thing you can find to complain about? Little girls will not think twice about this t-shirt. Stop victimizing your daughters, if you don't like it don't buy it! This whole whiny "girls are super too!" argument is just ridiculous. Is the wording choice the best? Not really but I do not believe this is petition worthy. Get off of your high horses, I'd buy this shirt for my daughter in a heart beat and never once get myself into a panic about what it "will do" to her self esteem. Seriously, get over it.

I think I speak for the majority when I say SHUT THE HELL UP. People need to lighten up and find a hobby. Are there not enough things in this world to worry about? Stupid liberal morons.

This is appalling stupid. The females in the comic books are in fact looking for their superheroes. I grew up with marvel comic books, and i'm still quite thoroughly a feminist, just one who thinks this is silly.

And mamato2b2g, take your snobby ego and shove it. I'm a liberal and I think this is silly, as will many other liberal feminists.

Going after Disney for being sexist is like going after Michael Bay for making awful films or water for being wet. Welcome to the planet Earth Disney is incredibly sexist and has always been. If you want to make a difference stop buying all their stuff and seeing all the movies. 6,000 signatures is really cute but this is the Mega-company to end all Mega-cmpanies. Buy your children's superhero shirts on Etsy, Amazon or Superherostuff.com

Some parents are really bothered by this?? Wtf?! Isn't that what Disney is all about since it was established?! Hmmmm.....let me think Mulan and another Disney movie, is it Brave? These are the only 2 I can think of that have a female as the lead hero. Soooooo......all of the other movies parents don't have a problem with?!? Aren't Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella all whisked away by a Hero?? Y'all need to seriously shut the hell up about having a problem with this.

Oh and to answer the question...yes it is a sexist shirt but hello like I stated before...Disney is overall sexist based on pretty much all of their classic Disney movies.

I just can't get worked up over this.  My daughter would probably want both shirts because she loves the Marvel characters.  She likes to pretend to be Spiderman and she also wants to meet Spiderman.  Honestly though, between Spiderman and Black Widow, I'd want Spiderman.  It's not Disney's problem if the male heroes are cooler than the female ones.  Sorry, but Iron man is cool and so is Spiderman.  Black Widow or the Wasp?  Not so much.

Yes, but money speaks louder than a petition, so just wont buy them.

Caera Caera

No, I don't. They're just t-shirts.

I think the women worrying about it are annoyingly whiney ninnies, though.

There are LOADS of female super heros! Marvel AND DC, but you never see them on tees. Im a huge lover of comics and have complained about this for years :(
