Does it seem like everyone hates math? Does it seem like math is harder than any other subject in school? Why is that? Could it be... Hollywood?
It sounds crazy, but frustrated math teacher Dan Meyer has created a mash-up of math references from movies and television. And wow. People in the movies really, really hate math. Good lord, this is what our math teachers and our kids are working against! Kids are constantly getting the message that math is hard and you're supposed to hate it.
What is it about math, really? I grew up hating it. It was hard, and tedious, and everything had to be exactly right or it was all wrong. One little missed detail and you might as well have written "fee fi fo fum" instead of actually trying to solve that long division problem. I hated math all the way through high school, until I finally decided to take Algebra seriously and got the first A in math ever in my entire life.

So when I became a mom I decided things would be different. I didn't even want it to enter my son's head that math is hard or boring or the worst thing he'd ever have to do in his entire academic life. And so far so good. I keep timidly asking, "so, how's math?" Fortunately he goes to a great school and he has friends who love math. So that must be balancing out all the trash-talking math gets elsewhere. It's not his favorite subject, but at least he hasn't learned to hate it, yet.
Oh boy, he sure hates showing his work, though. Is that how it begins? Anyway, check out this eye-opening (and hilarious) video of math according to Hollywood. And then tell me -- where are the positive messages about math? Iron Man, right? Tony Stark needs math to make that robot thing, surely...
