Suri Cruise Dresses for Spring Despite Freezing Temps

Suri CruiseBrrrr!!!! I can tell you straight up it is fuh-fuh-reezing here in New York City right now. Bone cold. The chill goes straight through your gloves, your winter coat, your boots, everything. But this doesn't faze little fashionista Suri Cruise in the slightest. The 6-year-old was out and about yesterday wearing what looked like a spring dress. Of course, we know Suri is a girly-girl through and through and wouldn't be caught dead in thermals. But there she is, prancing about the city in a purple dress that looks like it wouldn't keep out even the slightest of breezes, a wide open faux-fur coat, no hat -- and, gulp, NO TIGHTS. (As you can see from this photo, where Suri at least had a coat on, she is a fan of NO TIGHTS.)

That's right, little Suri's bare legs were out there for the biting 20-degree temps to gnaw on. She also sported a little pair of white ankle socks and pink slippers. She made me cold just looking at her.

We already know Suri is a spoiled willful child. Remember that time she had an epic tantrum because her mom wouldn't buy her a puppy? And that other time she had an epic tantrum? And that other time? So I can only imagine what mom Katie Holmes goes through in the morning when she's trying to get Suri to dress weather-appropriate.

"Suri, how about these nice flowered snow pants?"

"Hells to the no!"

"But it's cold out there."

"You hear me, lady? I ain't going out there looking like some frubby Eskimo."

Right? Katie has already opened up about her daughter's reluctance to dress for the weather, saying:

Recently, Suri and I were taking a walk and a fight got started because it was cold outside and she didn't want to wear her coat.

My philosophy is, well, fine, because after a block of walking, you're going to ask me for your coat. So the pictures of her [without a coat in cold weather] are sort of embarrassing, but I said, "Suri, I'll take the hit. Just put it on when you get cold."

I think this is the right approach. Why get into a huge ruckus and get the kid in a terrible mood if she doesn't want to wear what you want her to wear? Unfortunately, this leaves you carrying around a spare outfit. Suri might be one of those people who naturally runs warm -- I see them all of the time. There I am, blubbering from the cold, eyes stinging with tears, teeth clanging, and I'll see some girl happily prancing about in a miniskirt, or some guy lazing in summer shorts.

In the olden days, we thought the cold could actually cause a cold. But now we know it's viral and has nothing to do with the temps. Still, it's anxiety-producing to see a kid with frozen fingers and goose-pimply legs -- even if she's fine with it.

Do you fight with your kids about what to wear?

My kids hate to be all bundled up.  It seems as if most of the kids I've known do.  I think kids just have a higher tolerance for cold than grownups.  At any rate, if they get cold, they'll ask for a coat.  The only time I put my foot down about bundling up is if there is a wind.

It's a gray skirt, and it's her school uniform, and her mom has said many times she hates wearing pants.

I hate the cold but I hate wearing jackets and new England isn't doing it for me right now. I feel you suri.

I would probably put some tights in my purse for just in case.  But hey I think this is a fine lesson to teach.  Some kids need to learn the hard way and this is a safe one to give on.

We are Americans living in England. The kids at the school my children attend wear coats to school with tank tops underneath. I am freezing and they are under dressed.

My step kid HATES wearing pants and doesn't care to bundle up and we live in the north. She has 2 options, either dress for winter or we aren't going anywhere. It took almost a whole winter and lots of screaming and crying to get her to smarten up.

Kids also hate eating their vegetables but that's why they have parents to tell them what is the best for them.

Ha; I wish I had of told my mother NO! Pretty sure I wouldn't be here now.
