Mom Injured As Frantic Parents Stampede to Sign Kids Up for School (VIDEO)

parents stampedeThere's almost nothing I wouldn't do to ensure that my children get the best education possible. Almost. I certainly wouldn't push, shove, and run over other parents just for a chance to sign them up for a particular school. But some parents would ... and did.

According to WABC, it happened in South Carolina last week. In the district, parents are allowed to select the school of their choice on a first come, first serve basis. The sign-up began Monday, but historically parents have camped out for as long as a week to secure a good spot. This year, because of previous distractions to the school day, camping out wasn't allowed to begin until 4 p.m. Friday.

So the parents waited, just outside the school grounds, and when the clock struck 4 p.m., so did mass chaos, as parents raced for a place in line.  One mom fell as the crowd rushed forward and was injured and taken to the hospital after she was caught up in the mess.

Fortunately, she was okay, and her injuries weren't serious (and her kid did get a spot in the school she wanted). But video footage shows the stampede of parents, fights, and total chaos. It's pretty surprising that no one got badly hurt. Check out the scene here:

Crazy, right? To a degree, I get it. Education is important, and you have to fight for your kids sometimes. But not like this.

It's sad really. And ironic that people who are so concerned about their child's education would act in this manner since they're their child's first teachers. A school and teachers can only do so much, but if their primary example is someone who would trample another human to get what they want, no amount of education is going to help them truly succeed in life.

How far would you go to ensure your child got into the school of your choice?

Okay, doesn't that tell you how desperate people are to get their kids into good schools.  School choice should be a normal thing.  Competition is wonderful.  It allows schools to specialize, if they wish, but it almost always pushes people/organizations to be their best!

When your state is 49th in the country for education, you do what you have to. I live in this city and my daughter goes to one of the better schools here but because it is her assigned school. If you pay or wait in lines your kid can go to the better schools if you don't live in the assigned area. It ends up with much larger classrooms though.

I don't entirely blame the parents for the chaos. I mostly blame the school district for allowing it to come to this. What exactly does this accomplish? How does this better teaching and learning?
